Hello,
The exact seed blend is listed on the back of the bag of Pennington Smart Seed Sun & Shade. It does contain perennial grass seeds such as fescue and perennial ryegrass.

Answer:
Hello,
Warm season grasses can be sown between April and August normally. If you seed in the fall make sure you are using a seed blend that will grow in the cooler fall temperatures.

Answer:
Yes, it germinates better if you put a little straw over the patchy spots. Be sure to water every day the first week to keep the seed damp, enabling it to germinate quicker.

Answer:
Hello,
Clearing the area of debris and loosening the soil will help the new seedlings grow. Covering the seeds protects them. The Pennington Seed Starter Mat (SKU# 313-562) would be a good option and easier to use than wheat straw.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 42 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very disappointed in this product We received this grass seed on June 21, 2016. It is now August 2, 2016,and after having our gardener sow and then fertilize the ground with high quality steer manure, and having watered the area almost daily since the seed arrived, NOTHING has grown. I would not recommend this product to anyone and I am disappointed that Home Depot would sell it. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked when nothing else did! We've had a problem area in our front yard and tried for years to re-seed it. Despite our best efforts (and we're master gardeners!), nothing really took hold. Until a neighbor recommended this product. A couple of weeks after the first application, we had grass growing. It's now been several weeks and it is *still* growing! Yay! June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best grass seed on the market I live in the Midwest and do my own lawn, gardening and landscape. This is the best grass seed on the market. I have used it for years and many of my neighbors asked about the grass seed I use. They have started using it. It germinates easily and the grass is beautiful. The second year is even lovelier, thicker, and plush. Even the professional grass cutting company asks me about my yard. June 15, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Never worked Did everything I was supposed to do. No seed germanted and still have patches in the yard. June 28, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Grass Worried me a little when it didn't sprout as quickly as other seed. However, when it did come in about a week later than I expected it it was worth the wait. It came in strong and thick. November 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fast growing Grass. You'll be cutting grass more often. Grows really fast. You'll be cutting grass more often, but as green as ever. May 30, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Good then Bad I overseeded and patched bare areas with the sun & shade mix in May'15. The seed germinated beautifully in ~10 days and stayed strong throughout all of '15. I was excited! Fast forward to '16 and ALL of the grass from this seed died over the winter. The winter in my area was one of the mildest in years. I also patched bare areas with Jacklin Seed grass seed and those survived the winter and look better than nearly all of my lawn. Lesson learned: buy cheap Pennington seed and pay the price. April 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Seed Nice seed to fill the dead spots. It grows quickly. July 12, 2015
