Questions & Answers

do you need to use underlay pad with this?

Asked by: sam
I would. They have some inexpensive ones but If your sub-floor is fairly flat, probably not. We used an underlayment because our sub-flooring is concrete and pretty rough.

How would the Monson Slate hold up in a Hair Salon under the nail tables (Nail dust is like sand paper)...

Asked by: wando
it should hold up good as long as it is not getting wet all the time, I installed it in my kitchen and living room, I have installed a cheaper grade of laminate flooring in my wife salon and it has worked well for us

How has your expericence been with scratching?

We have read mixed reviews of scratching - some have dragged appliances across with no damage, others report scratching with daily wear. What are folks finding after it has been installed for while? Thanks!
Asked by: juneau
they scratch pretty easily. the finish is a thin layer.

Customer Reviews

XP Monson Slate 10 mm Thick x 11-1/8 in. Wide x 23-7/8 in. Length Laminate Flooring (18.36 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 92.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great looking, easy as pie I did a 120 sqft kitchen in this and it took me about two hours from start to finish. I had no complaints, although I will agree with other commenters that their was no "click" or "snap" letting you know each place was properly locked in. I used a block of wood and a hammer to bang it once to get them set. Once complete, it looked amazing. People have to bend down and touch it to see what it is, and they still think its real. I am impressed. I gave only 4 of 5 for quality because it has only been installed for a few months. No scratches to report yet though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Floor The sample photos don't do it justice. Read the directions, use the soundbloc underlay, and buy the simple solutions installation kit, They all help to do a quality install. A power miter saw saves time for end cuts, and a table saw for the long cuts really helps, Although a saber saw or circular saw in a steady hand would do the job. This floor really does look like high end slate. My photo is in bright sunlight, it's a touch darker in incandescent lighting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great slate look alike The look and feel of stone keeps all our friends guessing. I had to use a rubber mallet to lock the short ends together. I would not remove the locking tab other's reviews said they did. Lastly, it wasnt until I was cleaning up after completion I realized the directions are on the bottom of the box. Found directions online.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FLOORING IS SO GREAT I USED IT ON A SECOND PROJECT THE MOSON SLATE LAMINATE IS A RICH LOOKING,EASY TO INSTALL PRODUCT. I INSTALLED MY FIRST PROJECT AT MY PERSONAL HOME 1 YR. AGO. MY WIFE AND I WERE SO IMPRESSED THAT WE INSTALLED THE SAME PRODUCT IN ONE OF OUR RENTAL HOUSES. BOTH HOUSES HAVE WHITE CUPBOARDS( FROM HOME DEPOT) AND THE FLOOR COLOR MAKES IT SO RICH LOOKING. WE HAVE A MEDIUM SIZE DOG WHO TRAVELS THE FLOOR SEVERAL TIMES A DAY WITH NO SCRATCHES. IT'S EASY TO INSTALL SINCE YOU CAN PUT IT TOGETHER FROM EITHER SIDE SO YOU CAN GET INTO ALCOVES SUCH AS WHERE THE RANGE AND DISHWASHER ARE LOCATED. I'M VERY IMPRESSED.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Floor This flooring is absolutely beautiful, and very easy to put down. I was hesitant to make such a huge purchase online, but everything came quickly, and in perfect condition, not a single tile was damaged. The tiles are really thick, and very sturdy. The top laminate is hard as steel too, and it looks like it will hold up under normal wear and tear easily. Here's a hint, buy a really good quality carbide tipped saw blade for cutting these tiles. I bought two cheaper carbide blades, and wore both of them out completely at the halfway point. Then I bought a good carbide blade, and it held up well for the other half of the project, and is still fairly sharp. These tiles and the laminate surface on them are HARD, and will really put the hurt on your saw blade. They are easy to work with though, and once I figured out what corner of the room to start in , they literally snap together. I bought a good rubber mallet which I used quite a bit to help "snap" the locks together on the side of the tiles. I found that by setting up one entire row, sliding them together BEFORE snapping them down makes a world of difference. I had no problem getting them together and didn't have to use the metal pry bar at all. Thanks to all who posted reviews here too, your insights and hints made my flooring job a breeze. I checked the floor for marks and scratches after putting the new refrigerator in it's spot (several times) and the stove too, and there wasn't even a hint of a mark or scratch. Like I said, the laminate is hard as steel.... These pictures don't do the look of this flooring justice because of the lighting. It's actually a rich dark slate look, and has been confused by some of our friends for REAL slate... they can't believe it's laminate tiles. Home Depot's online service was fantastic, and answered all my questions about my purchase before I clicked the "buy" button. Very very please with this project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from outstanding product! We looked a long time for a floor for our kitchen renovation. This was the final piece that brought it all together. I've installed a lot of flooring from carpet to tile to every laminate out there. This was by far, the easiest installation I've ever experienced. By properly placing the long side in the opposing tile and carefully aligning the shorter side, all you need to do is lay it down then using a wood block, tap on the short side and they snap right in place. Be sure that the long side is properly seated all the way in before pushing down to align the short side. After two or three times, you quickly get a "feel" for when its properly in the groove.
