Bought this yesterday in Sydney NS. Installed it at the senior citizens complex in Port Morien for my mother. Her other bird feeder was being emptied daily by squirrels and racoons. As she finds it hard to get around, she is 89, she would have to wait for someone to visit her to get the feeder filled. She found the squirrels particularily annoying as they would sit outside her window and eat the seeds until they were gone. Often coming back to chase away the birds. I have returned to Saint John and was just talking to her. She was laughing at how hard a time the squirrel was having trying to get at the seeds and how often he fell off the feeder. The birds have found the feeder and she is having a wonderful time watching them and it seems the feeder will stay filled for many days instead of just one day. I am going to pick one up this week and take it to my summer place. Whoever came up with this one,....Great Job!!!!!

The barn design of this feeder is so cute, and it keeps those pesky squirrels away from the seed.

Hi...I recently added this birdhouse to my collection. I was attracted to it's good looks and design but soon discovered it was not that functionally successful. Squirrels and chipmunks are very attracted to it and they do not give up easily...their persistance in getting at the seeds often results in them somehow managing to dislodge quite easily the roof mechanism thus knocking off the roof and getting to the birdseeds through the top opening. One day there was a chipmunk sitting inside the nearly emptied birdfeeder feasting on the remains. There were few if any birds attracted to this feeder but many more rodents..I finally took it down....the squirrel and chipmunk visitation declined rapidly after. Now I have hung it up again without birdfood and suspended little hummingbird feeders from it and am contemplating putting a plant inside (though the flowering season is almost over this year). One more thing..the hanging part of this design is also very unstable if hanging on a wire or clothesline tied between the trees as in my little forest area. It always gets lopsided no matter how many hanger or hooks I use to put it up....There are definitely better squirrelproof birdhouses to purchase but this is not one of them!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by GAroofer All metal feeder
The feeder is all metal with no wire connection to wear out or break. Only negative is it did not take the squirrels very long to figure out how to defeat the the bar from closing. Otherwise, very attractive and solid unit that should last for years

I have the metal version of this, only metal is a defense against squirrels.
Holes a ton of seed, less filling! ... except smart squirrels learn to hold onto sides, so perch doesn't close up seed feed holes - THEN they will try to empty this feeder.
Tried a Home Depot hanging clear dome - defeated sqirrels fro awhile but eventually squirrels defeated this combination. A larger dome can be found on line (~$55) but I am starting over with something not so wide and a sturdy hang dome that is at least 3" larger.

Squirrels figured it out within 24hrs. Hang from the top and sides. After three modifications it is now squirrel proof. Looks weird (now), but works.
