Answer:
The square portion at the top of the chimney can be unscrewed, unlocking the roof. The roof can then be lifted for seed to be put in the feeder.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 18 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very disappointing. I've fed birds for years and foiled the squirrels with conventional feeders using various devices. After moving to a new home (and getting rid of my feeders) and starting a veg garden I was reluctant to hang new feeders with the amount of pest squirrels in the area but relented under pressure from my wife's insistence. I have this feeder hanging from a tree. The big problem is as a squirrel gets on the feeder the weight of the squirrel rotates the feeder front or back and the entire feeder turns on the axis of the hanger it's hung from. Depending on where it ends up the squirrel has free access to the seed in the tray and when it's eaten all available, leaves and I'm left with a feeder that the birds can no longer a access due to it upset position. The device to secure the top seems really cheap also. Now I have to come up with a way to keep the feeder from rolling over. I bought a "squirrel proof" feeder so I wouldn't have to deal with the pests. After years of bird feeder designs this seems like a big step backwards. I bought a squirrel proof tube feeder from the same maker at the same time. This seems better. Actually, I fill that several times before having to fill this one. Not sure why, but the birds just don't seem attracted to this one. This was observed even before the rotation problem. May 17, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Love watching birds Put the feeder out only to see a squirel actually sitting in it. Once I went out and closed the top tighter haven't had any squirrel problems. Birds are loving it and I have it outside my office window so I can watch them. December 29, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Bigger birds with the spring all the way up spring is to strong, big birds still can eat seed Otherwise very strong feeder, just wanted to feed the smaller birds The spring is just like the picture on the left, all the way up May 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great quality for the price Had one like it, that one lasted for years. Hope this one is the same! March 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very nice! Well built! Works great! I bought this to replace a very very old perky pet feeder. It's such a pretty little feeding house! You refill with seed from the top of the roof and it's so easy to take on and off! I almost thought it couldn't be that easy! Birds are happy, squirrels are not! What else is there to say! :) February 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product - May want to re-think packaging I bought this product as a Christmas gift for my mother. I love the product; however, I had it shipped to her (as I live out of state) and the package arrived with what was in the package written all over the box it came in. It was easy to see what she was receiving from me for Christmas. Aside from that, I was very pleased with the product. December 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful I brought this for my husband for Christmas. He loves it. Seems to be working well. January 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Smarter squirrels I bought this squirrel-proof bird feeder about 7-10 years ago and watched as the squirrels took a couple of days to figure it out. One smart squirrel unscrewed the chimney and stole the wing nut. I never could find it! It rendered it worthless! And it seems that I can't order a wing nut. December 28, 2015
