Can system withstand lake ice in northern Pennsylvania during the winter or should it be removed in the fall and reinstalled in the spring?
Asked by: sam
It is always a good idea to get your float onshore if the lake freezes. In the spring, the wind can push the ice floes onshore, with your float sandwiched in between, with devastating results.

how many float drums do I need for a 4' by 16' long dock

Asked by: benzi
I would guess 6. I built a 6 X 12' dock and used 4 floats. Works well. With 16' I would want a center support thus the extra floats in the center. But 4 would have the buoyancy you need.

How much water is displaced when a 24 x 48 float is placed in the water with no additional weight placed on top of it? How much water is displaced if I were to place 200 lbs of weight on top of it? I am asking these questions because I want to know how high above the water line my dock will be floating. Thanks in advance!

I upgraded my floating dock from four 20"x10"x8' billets to four of these and could not be happier. The dock sits higher and the billets are lighter. Mine did not come with installation instructions, needed particularly for the vent plugs, but I found the information on the Permafloat website. These were a bargain for the money and free shipping to my door.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Better off with the larger sizes In 2000 I did a dock repair with one of the roto-molded dock floats. Twelve years later the top of the float is dusty. Meanwhile the styro log floats in the rest of the dock are in pretty pitiful condition. These roto-molded dock floats are the way to go. Since I'm nowhere near any vendors for the floats, total price was much cheaper at Home Depot.com. Really a great deal. However, I ordered four of these 4x4' (12" deep) floats and two of these 2'x4' andhe manufacturer shipped the four 4x4' floats by truck, but shipped both of the 2'x4' floats UPS. They just had a label stuck on them. There were gouges in the edges of the 2'x4' floats at the bottom. I suggest you try to design your dock so as to use larger floats such as the 4x4x12s as much as possible. Try to avoid the smaller floats that can be shipped by UPS. Alternatively, just be prepared to have to re-order the 24"x48" floats until you receive what you need that are in good shape. Additionally, keep in mind that the price per pound of floatation is less for the larger sizes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product ...just what I needed Converted standard pier to floating dock. Easy attachment with holes provided. Can't beat the price. No more adjusting pier with the varying water levels. I'm very happy with the results. No ice surges in spring, so I don't have to pull anything out for the winter.
