The package says " These lamps should not be used in ceiling fans ' - why what is the difference?

I tried to find the replacement options from the answer on the other similar question , but couldn't find any of them. Is any LED option available ?

I'm going to ask this question for the 5th time and hopefully someone will be able to give a satisfactory answer. My ceiling fan, Vasner 52 in. Colonial Pewter Ceiling Fan by Hampton Bay, uses a 100w Halogen bulb. I'm sure of this because it came with a 100w Halogen bulb and the manual also says to use a 100w halogen bulb (mini candelabra base). I went to HD the other day and picked up a couple replacements and when I returned home I realized that it says to not use your bulbs in ceiling fans. Now I'm wondering if I really do need to go back to Home Depot and return these bulbs. What is the reason for not being able to use these bulbs in a ceiling fan?
Asked by: Chris
My guess . . . Many ceiling fans put the bulb in a closed container (metal above, glass dome below) so there is no way to get the heat out, and Halogen bulbs are VERY hot. Running at high heat reduces the life of any incandescent bulb. (LEDs run cooler). To reduce the heat, and hopefully improve the life you can: 1) Dim the bulb 10%; 2) Search on line for a type JD E-11 mini screw base bulb - select the wattage you want but the important feature is to select a bulb rated for 130V (not the standard 120V). Running a bulb below its rated voltge (i.e. running a 130v bulb at 120v) will increase its light with slightly less light/lumens.

The package back says "These lamps should not be used in ceiling fans." Do you have other replacements?

Asked by: George

The bulbs provide excellent light but have a track record of burning out early. I have replaced 20 or so at $8-$9 a pop...and they seldom meet their expected hours of operation. Unfortunately there is no LED solution and no viable alternative for meeting the requirements of my light sockets. When I asked a rep at Home Depot, he acknowledged they were a problem bulb and recommended I put them on a 'dimmer switch' and run them as 80% to 90% power...never on full power...and it seems to have helped substantially in extending their useful lifetime. This issue is no unique to Phillips...I've had similar issues with other brands.

The original bulb that came with ceiling fan/light was marked on t he box Fundix JD Ell 120V 100W. Researched shows: Fundix is a manufacturer. JD E11 can be ordered with 120V or 130V rating. Using a 130V rated bulb on 120V home power/voltage will last a lot longer, but a slightly less light/lumens out. And the online price was lower.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't last long For such an expensive bulb you would expect it to last a very long time. I have to replace these every few months and they are just used in the bathroom vanity in my home (so not constant use) Unfortunately I need this size bulb to fit into the vanity sockets I buy it because I have to. If you are putting in a vanity avoid this type of bulb and bulb size like the plague

This bulb is easy to replace and the light is bright enough, but the bulbs seem to break or burn out for no apparent reason and it could be a week, a month, or many months. I have a bag of broken bulbs that cost a lot of money, but there is no other option. I either replace my light fixtures or keep buying these expensive bulbs, and roll the dice as to them staying lit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works!! I've purchased these bulbs over the past few years. I've never had a faulty bulb. The bulbs are used in ceiling fans either a dimmer. The bulbs do get hot, but it puts our great lighting at full lumens and even when dimmed. Some bulbs have not lasted as long as stayed, nonetheless, it's still a good bulb.

Sadly only worked for 2 months, it seems as though the lower watt lasts much longer, its a pain my fixture is 14 feet off the ground so looks like I need to bust out the ladder again. From here on out I will be sticking to the lower watt model at least that lasts a bit longer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Life too short This is for my ceiling fan and the bulb dims nicely but I replace them every six months. Trying to keep it on low luminaries (brightness) does not extend its service life. However it is only one that fits the fan.

My suggestion is to never buy a fixture that utilizes this bulb or any other that can be described as "a heater that happens to put out light."
