Answer:
Switch (or probe) and pulse start are different. Switch start lamps initiate the arc using a separate starting electrode. Pulse start lamps initiate the arc using a high voltage pulse through the operating electrode. The two electrodes in a switch start lamp tend to weaken the arc tube leading to more rapid deterioration of the quartz enclosure and lumen depreciation.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by The right part Good to know I can get this lamp for our HID light fixtures in the shop. July 28, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by light Hard to find right bulb. Had to go thru three different bulbs. July 28, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I hope these last longer than Sylvania The Depot sure wants me to write a review on this product. Well, they all work, but my past troubles have been with real-life hours of service. I'd seen a few references to Philips being better than Sylvania, so I'm trying these. BTW, they said that the following part of my comments would not appear on their site, so I'll paste it in here: Packaging of the product was atrocious. The individual bulb boxes/sleeves were not tightly packed together, nor was there any packaging material, such as foam peanuts, bubble wrap, kraft paper - nothing. Free to roll and tumble about inside the large box they were shipped in. June 14, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Same light as the suppliers I normally source this item from a regular supplier but having it at the local HD makes emergency issues a little less stressful. November 21, 2011
