Answer:
I buy them indiv. I had them for many years as long as the ballets holds up. The ballets cost a lot more than the bulbs. They are almost obsolete. The better way to go is the LED. In the long run you will save a bundle on replacements and electricity.

T8 is smaller than T12. T12 is about an inch in diameter and the T8 is more like a half an inch. T8's are supposed to be more energy efficient.

Answer:
T12 and t8 are by bulb diameter. They are not interchangeable. But because the pin size is the same if you ever have to change ballasts you can use t8 ballasts and use t8 bulbs. Just make sure to not cut wires too short near end pieces.

Answer:
The larger "original" type are the T 12. The newer, smaller diameter ones are T8. The number has something to do with a ratio/fraction formula. I believe that a T8 has the same pins and can be used in a T12 because there is room for the bulb, but a T-12 can't be used in a T8 fixture because there wouldn't be for the larger T-12 bulb.

No. I tried two different brands of dimmer switches and neither worked for my 50 bulbs in my basement ( all on same circuit.) I sure wish they were dimmable, because my basement lights up like WalMart ( too bright).

They're not specifically rated as "dimmable." At these prices, it's probably safe to say they're not. I do have these tubes, they work great, but I don't have them wired to a dimmer switch... for what it's worth.

I think you need to look for High Output fluorescent bulbs & fixtures for cold garages. If you can afford the LED fixture that HD sells, it not only should work in cold weather but the light output is very bright. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lithonia-Lighting-2-ft-White-LED-High-Bay-Light-IBH-11L-MV/203812710#
