I would like to replace the four R16 40-watt incandescent bulbs that fit my mini-eyeball trim recessed housings with R16 40-watt LED bulbs or equivalent and since I don't see any R16 LEDs available at Home Depot, could I use the A19 dimmable LED instead?

Answer:
An A19 bulb is a poor choice for small recessed lighting housings, due to the beam is arbitrary (hence the A designation). Too much light would be wasted inside the housing, since it is recessed.
You'll need the same R (reflector/flood) type of bulb in order for you to get the same focused and directional light you had before.

You'll need the same R (reflector/flood) type of bulb in order for you to get the same focused and directional light you had before.
With that said, at least with us, I've seen a PAR16 (parabolic aluminized reflector) that is the same size (16 means 16 eighths of an inch diameter) of an R16 online and at your local store.
Below are some that I linked that should work for you:

The biggest difference between a PAR16 and R16 other than the look if it, is that the PAR will give you a much brighter and farther reaching light.
While I realize you may want a softer light, the PAR16 is currently the closest solution we'd have for updating your recessed fixtures.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good purchase Dims very we\ll for an led. No hum that I have noticed. More natural light than cree, which I also have. Overall a little more costly than cree brand bulbs but worth the extra couple dollars when you are spending this much on bulbs. Best 40 and 60 watt led's I have found. October 26, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quiet, works with dimmers, very nice, better than Cree I can confirm that these don't make noises on dimmers, unlike Cree. I tried the Cree on the best dimmer that Leviton had to offer, but that didn't change the buzzing sound. These did it. And so did the slim form. I am only buying Philips from now on. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent replacement for CFL These bulbs went into a stairway fixture controlled by an electronic dimmer. They work great and give a light that looks exactly like incandescent. No more flashing off and on when the grandkids turn the dimmer too low. May 14, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Replacement Put this bulb in a desk lamp. It replaced an "encased" CFL that took forever to warm up and whose light quality was so so. This bulb is instant on with no warm up and its light quality is indistinguishable from an incandescent. Highly recommend. February 20, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by highly recommended Bright, pleasant color, attractive design, dimmable as advertised. August 17, 2013
