If sensor not facing the Sun after screwed in a light bulb, the sensor may not work

so please make at least 360 degree sensor .
Asked by: Anonymous
I have two of these installed, both are facing at about 2 o'clock (12 would be the rear wall) and they are working wonderfully. One is even under a large aluminum awning. As of 2016, (when I'm writing this) they no longer have a ratcheting base. It doesn't seem to affect the photocell. I'm also in an area of the US which doesn't get a ton of sun. A+ bulbs.

How does it perform in extreme cold weather?

Hi, I live in NE Ohio, and, in the winter, the CFL currently on my porch takes several minutes to "warm up" and become bright. (It is not a dusk to dawn.) So I'm concerned that this one may do the same.

I live in central Texas---it can get below freezing, but not for long periods of time. This bulb has worked year round for me.

Does this bulb work in enclosed fixture with frosted glass?

We are replacing porch and garage lights and really want dusk-to-dawn feature but aren't happy with the lights out there that come with it. My wife found the lights of her dreams but they have a frosted "Champagne" colored glass enclosure. She doesn't think these lights will work and that we'll have to wire and mount a separate photocell -- something I am not willing to do!

Mine work inside of frosted glass. They even work inside of a white plastic globe. It seems to take a little longer to sense when it's getting dark but still turns on before sunset. Haven't tried them with darker glass, though. I'm guessing that it may turn on earlier, but I can't say for sure.

Would these bulbs work on a covered porch? As you can see in the picture my light in under the porch.

Asked by: Nean
I'd be very surprised if they wouldn't work for your installation. Mine are not on a porch, but they are in very opaque fixtures under dense shade and they work fine. I suggest installing with the sensor (located at the base of the bulb) facing out toward the front of the porch to maximize exposure to sunlight.

60W Equivalent Soft White Spiral Dusk till Dawn CFL Light Bulb (4-Pack) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 244.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best!! We have four enclosed craftsman style lights on stone columns running along the front of our house on the street. We had tried several different dawn to dusk mechanisms, namely ones that screw in between the light fixture and the bulb. Some worked marginally with a lot of adjustment, some not at all, some would work for a while then start flickering on and off. These CFL bulbs with the built in dawn to dusk work perfectly. Just screw them into the fixture and they perform. If it is dark and you happen to turn OFF the light switch that controls the fixture, just wait 30 seconds and then turn it back on. They will blink 4 times, then stay on. We are very very happy with this product.

This new batch no longer has the swivel base which allows you to position the bulb so that that the eye faces outward away from the house. The bulb still works but for porch lights under a roof and/or on the side of your house, having the light sensor facing inward towards the house means the light comes on much sooner than it needs to. This may vary from fixture to fixture depending upon where the threads start and the sensor winds up when screwed all the way in. Mine no matter how I screwed it in faced the side of the house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised I installed two of these bulbs in outdoor fixtures in front of our house. Our HOA requires that every home have dusk-to-dawn lighting in front and I had no way to put the fixtures on a timer. These bulbs are the perfect solution. Even though the glass in the fixtures is opaque, and they are shaded by trees, the bulbs do not come on until dusk, and they go off at sunrise, so there's no unnecessary power consumption. They are plenty bright. I've had them for only a couple of weeks, so I can't attest to durability, but so far I'm very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for outside lights! I bought some replacements because I thought mine had burnt out (apparently it was just the freezing cold). They have been working for over 2 years now without the need of replacement - work well turn on at dusk and off at dawn. Love that I don't have to worry about forgetting to turn off the outside lights!

They have not stayed lit consistently at night. They will randomly flash on or off, which will not work for the purpose of providing outside light to my guests. Will return and try an LED version.

These mini twister 60 W dusk till dawn light bulbs from Phillips barcode number 0 46677 40585 were just what I was looking for. They were found online and shipped to the store for pickup for free. They only use 14 watts of electricity and put out 900 lumens each. I previously had 3 outside light fixtures (coach lights) with screw in dusk to dawn timers on 2, and a 4-6 hour screw in timer on the other one, with separate bulbs screwed on top of all of them. This pushed the lighting cone too far up into the fixtures into a canopy lid. I have replaced all 3 outside timer/bulb combinations with these individual bulbs so that the bulb is positioned lower in the light fixture to give off more lumens. The light fixture covers do not stop so much of the light now and the 3rd fixture stays on until dawn so that it shows out to the front sidewalk for the kids in the morning, The areas around them are now lit in my estimate by about 50% more light than the previous 60w bulbs that were being partially blocked by the lid on top. The price was fair when considering I had to purchase 2 separate pieces before. It also is worth it since my light fixtures have 2 small screws to remove to get the lid off, and replace bulbs. The lower the number of times I have to do this, the better it is. The "life 9.1 years" is based on 3 hrs per day. I'm running them about 12 hours per day since I live in the midwest and not at the north nor south pole. That gives me about 2.28 years before I have to replace them. I just installed them about a month ago in November 2016. We'll see how long they really last. Excellent product for my use.
