Customer Questions & Answers

Wattage.

Is the ANSI S68 code just for a 50W version for HPS bulbs? Or can a higher wattage be used? These bulbs are becoming harder to find and if only a higher wattage is available wonder if can be used?
Asked by: MScotty
Yes, I'm answering my own question too. Found a HD that has these bulbs in stock along with others of different wattages. Each package has a different ANSI # which pertains to the ballast they require. My light fixture requires a S-68, which is a 50w bulb. So I bought a couple to have on hand as spares. These lights do last a long time.

Will this bulb work in a regular reading lamp rated for 100 watts?

Asked by: Bill
No! High Pressure Sodium bulbs require a ballast. Although they have a medium base and will screw into a standard light socket, they will not light without a ballast specific to the bulb.

How do I know if this bulb is compatible with the ballast in my fixture?

Asked by: expoboy
The fixture or the ballast inside the fixture should be marked with the ANSI ballast code. For example in this case these lamps are only for use with ANSI S68 ballast (this is listed on the lamp box “For use only with ANSI S68 ballast”.) Next, you would just need to check that the fixture or ballast inside the fixture is marked with the S68 ballast code.

When the garage door light started blinking, I thought ballast or whatever, but decided to replace bulb. That did the trick, light stays on all night. The fact that these bulbs last years means the price is very reasonable.
