I have been using this starter pack for over a month now. I absolutely love it! It comes it a well packaged box with easy instructions on installation. Included in the box are three A19 (standard size) light bulbs, and a bridge with an ethernet cable. You simply connect the bridge to your router with the included cable. Then screw the bulbs into any fixture. For me it was 3 lamps in my bedroom. Finally, download the Philips Hue app on your tablet or smartphone. The app is available for iOS and Android 4.0 and higher. Then you can choose from a selection of popular "light recipes". Each one changes the lights to different colors. Or you can manually select the colors yourself. These lights will change to over 16 million different colors. You can also control the brightness of each bulb. Another thing I love about Philips Hue is that Philips made the source code available. So you can find a list of apps that other people have made to make the lights do different things. Sometimes I have to be to work before the sun comes up. So using the Philips Hue app on my Android phone I set a timer. At that time the lights come on very dim and slowly get brighter (you can change how long it takes to get to the desired brightness). Then when my alarm goes off my room is already lit up with a bright white light that wakes me up quickly. There are also countdown timers so you can have the lights fade off over your desired amount of time when going to bed. Once you have the starter pack you are able to add to your Hue ecosystem. You can add up to 50 total bulbs, lightstrips, or other Hue lighting products. While it's not a 'must have' product. Everyone that has been over is amazed at how fun and different these are. I will certainly be adding lights. Plus, if you don't like it you can always return it within 90 days for a full refund. Enjoy!

I installed the three lamps, downloaded the app on my iphone, connected the ZigBee bridge to my Wi-Fi. Simple installation. Once the phone app detected the bridge, it controlled the lights. You can turn them ON/OFF, dim them, select color, and you can also select scenes, which basically sets each lamp at a different color. You can control each lamp or all together. It worked flawlessly. The colors are very vibrant and the lamps respond to the phone almost instantly (no delays). The Philips app is free, but there are many other free and paid apps.
The lamps are Omni-directional, so they are only good in applications such as table lamps, bath vanity, and wall sconce. The lamps are damp locations rated, but not sure if they can handle cold weather. Since dimming and color changing is not practical for bath vanity and wall sconce, I think this is only good for table lamps. At 600 lumens, the light output is sufficient. The kit comes with three lamps, but I donât know how many people have more than two table lamps in one room, so at $200 for the kit and $60 for each added lamp, I think this is just an expensive toy (my kids love it). There are BR30 versions available also at $60, so to retrofit a kitchen with a bunch of these will get very expensive. I have 9 recessed in my kitchen so it would cost me almost $800 to be able to use my phone to control the lights and change the color a few times a year. Not worth it! If a 6â LED recessed retrofit costs $25, I would be willing to spend $5 more for remote control.

I love the concept and the ability to control them with your phone. I wish they weren't so darn expensive though. 60 bucks for another bulb! Also wish they were a bit brighter.

This kit was a replacement for a few mechanical timers we had and an opportunity to start automating lighting at various points in the house. It was a good start. The kit was a little expensive, but the bulbs and base station are well thought of and are good quality. I have only had a couple issues with the bulbs losing radio contact with the hub. Moving one table lamp seemed to help. I think I will be refining the setup for a while. Just the start.
