Answer:
You do not need a starter kit, but you'd need a wireless hub.
It can be purchased separately (via eBay or soon via an authorized retailers) OR in a starter kit, but it is required to operate the bulb to it's full potential. Without the hub, it is simply a white bulb.

Customer Reviews

Hue 65W Equivalent BR30 Single LED Light Bulb is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool Technology I have these in my home theater room as well as my home bar area. I would like to outfit my entire basement but they are pricey. There are other IOS apps aside from the HUE app that are much better. I installed the system and had it running within minutes. It's a novelty but it's a must for an entertaining area, man cave, etc as it adds an element to your parties.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these Lights I have almost 2 dozen of these lights in my basement and home theater room. They are fantastic! I love the party atmosphere I can create. The HUE App for IOS is ok, but there are others that take full potential of what these lights can do. These are a must for any Home Theater, Man Cave, Home Bar, etc.
