Why should these bulbs not be used in enclosed fixtures?

According to reviews I'm reading that these bulbs should not be used in enclosed fixtures. Does anyone know why that is? Does that mean I wouldn't be able to use them in dome fixtures or covered recessed fixtures?

Because these LEDs are too sensitive and they flicker and shut off randomly when in an enclosed fixture, even though they really don't generate much heat. It is SUPER annoying!!!!! I am getting rid of this darn bulb. It is not worth the hassle. We put the ones we bought in a clothes closet with a domed fixture. No issues to date, and the bulb is much cooler to the touch than a regular incandescent bulb.

Some half correct answers here. LED bulbs do generate some heat, but nothing on the order of incandescent and halogens, so fire hazard is NEVER an issue. HOWEVER, the LED's themselves are extremely sensitive heat, including the little bit that is self-generated. What happens in an enclosed fixture, therefore, is that the LEDS get shorter life spans.

I've had several of these installed in "totally enclosed" fixtures for well over a year now. Which are not only totally enclosed but are even packed with fiberglass insulation an inch plus thick on their back side.
The only one I had a problem with is the one where I was a dope and installed only one of these bulbs along side a conventional high heat producing incandescent light bulb (the fixtures hold two light bulbs inside their fully enclosed glass domes) and the high heat produced by the single incandescent bulb eventually slow cooked this LED bulb until it stopped working.
So basically I think the reason they say not to use them in totally enclosed fixtures is because they figured some dope like me would put them in a totally enclosed fixture that took more then one bulb and wouldn't replace all the bulbs at once and these bulbs would get slow cooked by a high heat producing incandescent bulb used in combination in the same fully enclosed fixture.
So long as you don't do that you should be fine, I've got lots of these bulbs installed in those totally enclosed glass bulb ceiling fixtures I indicated with no issues and the fixtures are cool to the touch after hours of use where as with incandescent bulbs installed in those fixtures they used to get so hot that if you touched the glass bulb it will burn your fingers (well over 200-F).
Can I absolutely guarantee that you will get the full life out of them when used in a totally enclosed fixture - NO. But, so long as you aren't a dope and install them in combination with a high heat producing incandescent bulb inside the same fixture based on my experience you can expect trouble free use for well over a year with no noticeable issues.
Be a dope though and install them in combination with the old style high heat bulbs in an enclosed fixture and, yes, you will slow cook these bulbs to death.
Bottom Line = Replace all the bulbs at once with these LED bulbs inside a fully enclosed fixture and you should be fine. Read Less

I have a couple installed in my home, and they run cooler than incandescents and other LED lamps [at least the ones I've tried], so I wouldn't hesitate to use them in any fixture that wasn't completely enclosed [meaning I WOULD use them in any fixture that had at least a square centimeter of air passageway, to get rid of the double negative.]

Thus they have some kind of heat-distribution in them to pull heat away from the electronics. In a low-power device like your cell phone, this is quite small. On the other hand, your desktop PC probably needs a fan to help with the cooling.
This bulb is apparently designed to work fine when air can circulate around it, but does not have adequate heat sinks for it to still work reliably in an enclosed environment (like a dome or a covered recessed fixture). There are LED bulbs that are rated for enclosed fixtures, at least within some limitations. (I have one that can be used by itself, but not if there are multiple bulbs in the fixture--apparently multiple bulbs generate too much heat.)
Most likely you would have no issues with a light like this in an enclosed fixture in a cool environment (like your refrigerator light), but if you used it in a ceiling fixture it would have a shortened life (much less than the rated 25,000 hours). In the worst case, something could melt (like the plastic) or you could cause a fire--I think a fire is very unlikely, but I take no responsibility if you do start one. Read Less

The manufacturer does not rate this particular bulb for totally enclosed fixtures. They are doing so to keep the bulb from running hotter than designed. A small aount of air flow will make a considerable difference. If it isn't a particularly tight fixture and in a hot environment, my guess is these will probably work OK.
Cree does make a 60 watt equivelant that is rated for enclosed fixtures. It appears that its design operating temperature is a bit higher than these. It is also an A19 size and not much more in price. Home Depot carries these. Read Less

I suspect it may be due to heat dissipation. Unlike nearly all other LED bulbs on the market, these do not have a metal heat sink at the base. They do get pretty warm - though not nearly as hot as the base on my Cree 60-watt bulbs. I doubt they'll get hot enough to create a hazard. Since LED life is reduced when they get too hot, I'm thinking this is a way to make sure they don't fail before their 3-year Read More

Even though it is LED technology, it still produces heat, and if there is not enough airflow, the bulb could overheat and deform. Normally the bulb will heat the air around it, which will rise. In an enclosure, the hot air is trapped and it will continue to raise in temperature. This will shorten the bulb life.

The soft white bulb provides a warm, softer light comparable to the older incandescent bulbs whereas the color of a daylight bulb appears brighter, though a bit more harsh. I typically use soft while bulbs (currently CFL except for one new LED bulb) throughout the house except where a stronger, brighter light is needed such as task lighting at my workbench and over the kitchen counter.

Soft white bulbs have a Kelvin temp near 3000 and put out a yellowish light. Daylight bulbs are closer to 6000K and a bluer light. Many people, my wife included, dislike the blue light of CFL and older LED bulbs.

Daylight bulbs have a frequency of light that is closer to bright white. It's a harsh light. Soft white bulbs have a more brownish tone and are softer. It's all personal preference other than be sure to match all the bulbs in an area otherwise the different light factors will look odd.

The soft white has a more yellow tinge to it, much like a standard bulb. The daylight bulb is a little more blue (but still white) and perhaps could be described as sharper.
For a living-room you may want the soft white, and the daylight in a craft room or garage.

Soft white is brighter white than a traditional lightbulb, which has a yellow glow, BUT the daylight bulbs look more like a blue light. I think the daylight, is supposed to be like daylight, but truthfully they look really blue. Daylight bulbs I have bought were never used and given to friends, it doesn't look normal.

Soft white is also know as warm white, which is basically light golden color. Day light is the color of outdoor light during the day at noon, so it is whiter than soft. Most people prefer soft white for indoor applications.

I have used their digital fade dimmers on halogen and incandescent but not LEDs to date, with no issues. The bulb should work with any dimmer. This is built from a strip of led's inside of a plastic housing, not like the typical bulb shaped led bulbs that are dimmable. I don't believe this bulb will buzz.

I always go to Lutrons website. They have a fancy cheat sheet that tells you compatibility. Just ge the ones that have LED in the description. They usually have a "trim" setting so you can set the bottom end of the dimming.

They should work with all standard dimmers, according to what is listed on the box and I have tried mine with my remote controlled dimmer without any problem.

All dimmer switches work on the same principle and I would only suggest that you invest in a quality, durable DS for your applications. The A19 led light bulb advertises dimmable. This because the light emitted is generated by a LED "Light Emitting Diode" and can be easily dimmed by lowering current supplied to the bulb.

We have four in a dining room light fixture with no buzzing. It's a standard dimmer, have not yet tried it on a 3-way so can't help with that.

Normal dimmers do not work with LED bulbs. When on a normal dimmer they will dim about 5% then go out. You need a dimmer specific to LED bulb technology. In addition, the LED bulb must be "dimmable" and it will say so on the package. Manufacturer LUTRON makes several dimmers that will work. Even though the manufacturer states "most dimmers", you can purchase dimmers made specifically for LEDs. The manufacturer is always the best source for the most accurate information.
I use a Leviton dimmer with this bulb and CREE bulbs on the same circuit and they all work fine - no hum and smooth dimming. Please note: the range of dimming for an LED is less than that of an incandescent.

This bulb appears to be not round. Does it put out a round or circular pattern of light? What is the lignt pattern?

Answer: 
If the light pattern is not round, it is not noticeable. I have these installed in recessed lighting and the table below does not have uneven light on it.

You can only notice the shape if you look straight at the bulb. Otherwise there's no difference in lighting. Not sure what would happen if you place it very close to a wall though.

I have them in lamps, cans & outside backdoor lights. If I didn't tell you, you wouldn't know they're there. Lit they look just like any other bulb.

I'm using it in a lamp with a shade and it is no different to me than a round incandescent bulb. I did try it in an overhead, single bulb dining room hanging lamp and still did not notice any difference from an incandescent bulb. I'm convinced these LED bulbs are the way to go.

The bulb is circular as shown in one view then thin when turned 90 degrees. The pattern of light in a lamp appears to be the same on all sides. This was one of my concerns when I bought the first bulb. Without a lamp shade I couldn't see a difference in light pattern on the wall corresponding the bulb shape. These were my observations not testes with a light meter or other testing devices.

It is like they took a normal light bulb and flattened it. The LEDs are around the outer edge but under the plastic to diffuse the light. I think that the light output pattern is the same as you would get from a normal incandescent bulb.

The light is slim, buts puts out a better light than your regular bulb. This light produces more lumens, but uses less watts. I replaced eery light in my home. Its great and I'm glad i bought it

It is round and it provides Omni-directional light pattern, probably 270 degrees or more. So, it is best suitable for table lamps, bath vanity, and similar.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not for Enclosed Fixtures I understand when incandescent bulbs heat up in an enclosed fixture they can be dangerous or shut the fixture down (ceiling "can" lights have this feature), but this is an LED bulb. These LEDs are soooo sensitive that any amount of heat and they flicker and shut off sporadically. This is not practical and a big hassle. These bulbs were not worth purchasing and I will be replacing them with something else. We've been exclusively LED's in our entire home for years, but at what inconvenience do we say enough is enough. A light bulb is to provide light and these don't consistently do that in slightly or completely enclosed light fixtures. Shame on Phillips for not doing more R&D before putting these bulbs out for sale. June 8, 2016

For years our garage light would constantly go out due to the excessive vibrations upon the filaments. So Dad and I tried other new age bulbs only to find that they didn't work well in the cold of winter. Now here it is the first week in January with temps ranging form 11 to 31 degrees °F. In these dark days of winter you need such a product to lift your spirits. Remember that angel Gabriel, no not the German physicist ~ the other one, well with the Phillips LED you can actually look at the arc of light without injury to your eye and when you close your eyes you'll see an afterimage manifestation of the letter "C" saying Chào chị! which means Hello. And that my sisters is how the Architects of Light overcome the darkness. January 6, 2016

It doesn't bother me, but the thin look - not round like a regular light bulb - might not be for everyone. They do dim; however the lowest light level is brighter than with a regular incandescent bulb, after which they just turn off all together. June 24, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works with Basic Slider Dimmer I installed two of these bulbs in an enclosed bathroom ceiling fixture. I also installed a Leviton 6631 slide dimmer rated as for use with incandescents only. They work fine together. When you slide the dimmer on, the lights come on at full brightness, so if you want to dim them, you have to slide the switch on, then back it down to where you want them. There is a little flicker as the lights dim, but nothing to worry about. The filcker stops when you set your level. Occasionally the light flickers to full brightness, then off when you slide the dimmer from a dimmed position to the off position. Two 60 watt bulbs is just right for our medium sized bathroom. Two 75 watts would be too bright. Photos show the fixture at full brightness, and dimmed. December 5, 2015
