How many inches are there between the bottom of the grate and the floor?

Or another way to ask is what is the height of the legs? The one I have now has only 3 inches clearance from the ground and I have to clean out the fireplace constantly,

What is the ground clearance?

I would like a fireplace grate with at least 5" of ground clearance or more.
Asked by: Vulture
The ground clearance out of the box is 4", but at 4" it wouldn't burn my wood very well, so I cut off 2". Now it burns great. For some reason, my fireplace likes the wood lower to the floor of the fireplace.

We are thinking of purchasing this grate for our wood burning fireplace. We will more then likely cut the legs as we want this closer for the coal burning effect. How or what tools are used to cut the legs? THANK YOU!!

This is a nice heavy fireplace grate, that I'm sure will live up to its 4 year warranty. I seem to burn through standard fireplace grates in a season, so I decided to get this one with the warranty so I wouldn't have to replace grates every year. My only observation is that this grate was a bit too high for my fireplace. For some reason, with the grate as-is out of the box, my wood wouldn't burn well - it just never got blazing like it used to. I cut the legs down 2" and now everything burns great. It's probably the design of my fireplace, but it seems to like the wood lower to the floor of the fireplace.

I'd recommend it mostly for small logs because its cradle is not as wide-open as it seems; its angle is deeper than what appears in the photo. You may have trouble fitting more than a couple of big logs in there. I have a gas fireplace and the grate's legs are not tall enough for the required clearance, so I use two 12"x12"x2" bricks to raise the grate and that works out OK. My 3 metal logs (of 1 large, 1 medium, 1 small) took a while to arrange and re-arrange, trying to fit them all in and to leave enough strategic space gap (for the gas fire) and to still look decent.

I recently returned a fireplace from a gas log to wood-burning (which it had been built for). The thin grate that held the gas log would have fallen apart quickly with the heat from a real wood fire. The fireplace is rather small and the Pleasant Hearth grate fits it perfectly. The rise is sufficient to allow the gas fire starter to be under it. After a few fires, the black paint is still intact. The grate is heavy duty and seems like it will last a long time.

The only warning: check that the front to back dimension is sufficient for you. This one is smaller than the one I had and will force me to build smaller fires. The width was same for both and OK by me.

This grate replaces one that served well for years, but was falling apart. This new grate of the same overall size is made with heavier bars, nicely welded to the supports. I expect this grate is going to last a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! I firmly believe in "you get what you pay for". In a product such as this, you don't want to go with the cheapest just because there is one. This is a great product for just spending a little bit more.
