Customer Questions & Answers

Can the glass doors be shut with a fire going?

Asked by: Casp
Glass doors of ANY fireplace door should not be kept closed with an active fire burning. The thermal glass on these doors cannot withstand the temperatures and can shatter. The doors can be closed when the fire is dying to embers. The only doors that can be kept closed are ones with pyroceramic glass which is VERY expensive.

The thing to be aware of is that Pleasant Hearth is able to keep their prices very competitive because their doors ONLY COME IN THREE SIZES. Literally SMALL- MEDIUM and LARGE. That is wonderful if your fireplace falls within the narrow specifications of these doors. Fully custom doors will set you back $800 to a few grand. And a semi custom close to $600. If you have a stone fireplace fascia with an irregular surface you will need a minimum 2-3 inch overlap so these doors may not meet spec. Great quality but very limited options.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Glass fireplace doors Easy to install. Looks great. The one thing is the screen to prevent ash from jumping out opens likes a door. My old fireplace screen opened up on a chain left to right instead of a door like structure. But overall I'm happy with it

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Acceptable, easy to scratch, potential for rust Compared to the cost of other fireplace doors, the quality of this product is acceptable with average value in my opinion. It looks great with a satin black finish that will match most decors and installs extremely easily. The only issues with installation someone could run into is if the actual fireplace surround bows out or curves inward...then there will be gaps between the fireplace door frame and the surround. In my case, the gaps are small enough that they could be overcome with the fireplace insulation. Unfortunately, as other reviewers have stated, there is nowhere near enough insulation provided. Two small strips of insulation are provided with direction to manually split it into additional strips to fill in the fire door cavities. I have ordered additional insulation elsewhere online and will have to cut it to size to make it work. The product itself is made of extremely thin sheet metal and feels like it could be bent extremely easily. However this only seems like it could be a problem if the product is manhandled excessively during the install. Also, the paint coat is thin and can scratch very easily if you are not careful during the install (e.g. don't let your screwdriver slip and don't let the frame slide against masonry). The paint is really only an issue at the bottom pivot point of the screen mesh doors. The mesh doors pivot on rods that are insert into holes in the door frame. The rods on the bottom corners of the doors have a recess where cotter pins are installed. These cotter pins are what hold the doors~1/8" off the door frame thus allowing them to pivot. Removing the cotter pin allows the doors to drop such that the rods in the upper corners of the doors exit the upper holes in the frame to enable the removal of the mesh doors. The issue with the cotter pins and the thin paint is that opening and closing the mesh doors causes the cotter pins to also spin on the door frame which in turns scrapes away the black paint to reveal bright metal. This isn't a really big deal at the moment, but the scratched metal revealed is a bit of an eye catcher and is a highly likely place to rust if you ever have moist air in your fireplace. Finally, one of my mesh screen doors has a large dimple in it that is about the size of a quarter. The dimple does not affect the performance of the product, but it is aesthetically unpleasant albeit only when the glass doors are open and there is no fire. If this product wasn't a mail order item and a birthday gift for my wife (who doesn't care about the dimple), I would have tried to exchange it. Although I have listed a bunch of negatives, the product still looks good when closed up. I have not used these doors with a fire yet, but once I get more insulation, I expect it will perform adequately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy! I purchased these doors online, and therefore was unable to see how they worked before hand. I have a curved brick fireplace, and the screen would not open due to the brick being lower on the outside corners. However, it was very easy to cut the brick with the proper router attachment, and the entire project took less than an hour. The doors are beautiful. Very high quality. For the price, I think we chose a winner. I searched for months and could not find any doors for a comparable price. They even come with insulation already in the box!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy install great customer support I bought this for christmas, im very happy overall. If you have ever used a screw driver, you will have no problem installing this grille. It took me all of 15 minutes to set up and install, it took more time to take it out of the packaging!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I received product in a few days after purchase. It took me longer to unpack the doors than to install them. I installed them in about 20 minutes by myself and they look great.
