I bought this for my 70 lb Collie, and this is the second these PlexiDor Top Swing doors I've purchased and installed; I needed one for the garage door to the back yard, and another for the utility room door to the garage. They ARE pricey, but if you've got a dog that chews on everything like I do, this is the best choice. There are no flexible flaps or plastic to get chewed up or break like may other doors I've seen reviewed . These doors are quality made of aluminum, with aluminum trim around the plexiglass swing panel, and I can attest are truly chew proof. This is a doggie door made to last a lifetime. You get what you pay for, even if paying for it makes you wince.
In my opinion, these older Top Swing doors are better than PlexiDor's newer dual side by side door offerings whose springs sometimes break - and they are considerably less expensive to boot.
No doggie door installation is ever easy due to having to cut a large hole in the door; and that takes a substantial power saw; though if you're real patient and determined, a hand keyhole saw would work on a hollow interior door. I used a large reciprocating saw, and I wouldn't care to try it with a normal jig saw. PlexiDor makes it a lot easier by:
1: having a substantial high strength frame so you don't have to frame in the opening you cut in the door.
2: PlexiDor giver you a full sized template that makes locating drill holes and the cuts for the opening easy. Just use a punch and/or awl through the paper.
3: The construction of the door makes the size and evenness of the sawed hole in the door very forgiving - far more than other doggie doors I've installed in the past (this is my 2nd Collie, and I lived in different places than now).
The price seems high, but if you've never installed a doggie door before, you could easily deeply regret paying less once you're trying to install it. Not to mention keeping a cheaper door working later OR having to replace it entirely.
The key lock to lock the doggie door is a big plus for keeping your dog out temporarily, and rarely to be found in other products. Plus the metal plate security panel that comes with the door makes taking a vacation or trip worry free - no intruder will get through it without a cutting torch. Plus it's easy to put on as it attaches with 4 screws held to the plate with retainers.
