Rated 5 out of 5 by Slothneck Love this Door! But Bewareâ¦
Installation was not easy. According to the instructions all you need is a jigsaw and a screwdriver...HA! False! All in all it was a 10 hour project between my Engineer dad and me (Thank God I didn't attempt it by myself!)
-Cosmetically 10 out 10
-Durability 10 out 10
-Ease of Use 10 out 10

I shopped around a long time for a quality dog door, and this was the best I could find. A month ago when I purchased my large Plexidor w/wall insert there were no reviews, so I was little leery to spend over $500 on a DOG DOOR!
In the end I went with this door for security reasons. Every year my wife and I go on vacation for a week or more and we felt more secure with this door versus the plastic versions. Our old house had a plastic dog door and that was how we used to break in when locked out. It was so easy, and therefore easy for a burglar to break in, so we made the investment in this door mainly for security reasons.
NOTE: Once we received our large Plexidor my 6ft 170lbs butt could crawl through it, therefore, if not locked so could anyone else. So when you leave for vacation...lock it. It secures fairly well.
You will install the door side on the inside which leaves the recessed portion facing the exterior -making it really obvious that you have a dog door. My remedy is to build & place a dog house on the exterior side of the door; so no-one would ever see or know the dog door exists! It simply looks like the dog is going in & out of his dog house! Plus it could act as a "mud" room to help clean their paws before going into the house. I actually choose to install ours into the garage, especially after the first rain when I saw all of the wet paw prints all the floor from my 80lb black lab. I don't know how people keep the floors clean when installed into a living room?
The size Large door fits right in between the studs ~16" wide (as opposed to X-Large which you need to cut into the studs) & the width of the actual opening the dog travels through is 14".
Both the faces (interior & exterior) are fastened to the metal wall insert, and only the door side actually screws into the wall. You would think the exterior side also screws into the wall, but no. It is only held in by the silicone & the wall insert (which IS screwed into the studs). If possible you might want to secure the exterior face/trim piece.
Also, they don't tell you, but Plexidor does provide you with a metal jigsaw blade & drill bit in your package of hardware, so in theory yes, all you need is a jigsaw and a drill, but after cutting sheet metal wall liner you will need a file (not provided) to file down the sharp edges. We opted to use a Skil saw rather than a jigsaw, which was much faster.
An unexpected step in our installation was that we had to build up the stucco (California house) around the door during installation, so if be prepared if your home is stucco. Additionally we encountered a random phone line coming through the stud right where we were installing the door so we notched the stud and pressed the wire into the groove just before setting the door. I mention all of this so others can be prepared. Prior to installation I assumed it would be an easy 2 hour install, but it was far from it. Last note of interest, the metal liner is actually to be installed sloping down to help drain any moisture out & away. You can't see that in their pictures, but while it is a nice touch you will be making angle cuts.
-Yes, I would recommend to anyone. However, if you are not mechanically inclined maybe hire somebody for the installation - although, perhaps it's easier to install on a house with wood siding rather than stucco or brick.
-Overall the door looks great, and the construction is to be expected with the amount of money you will pay.
-Love the saloon style doors and so does our lab! He hated the flap style door and only used it when forced to in our old house.
-He's not always the brightest dog in the pack, but he learned the door in less than a day! (we coaxed him with treats).
I also uploaded pictures, hope this helps!

Rated 5 out of 5Â by pickyb This door is exactly as advertised!
It's sturdy. No cheap plastic flaps. The doors are a nice plexiglass. We bought the large and my dogs, one is 60 lbs. and the other one is 15 lbs. figured out how to use it in a couple of days. Our cats use it too. There doesn't seem to be any draft around it. And being able to lock it is awesome. The metal plate goes on easy, too. It's a bit expensive, but I think it's worth the price.
