Product Overview

Pond Shield is a non-toxic epoxy liner designed for the pond and water feature industry. Created to construction water features or ponds with a more designer, formal or natural look than rubber liners are able to offer with no more unsightly folds or creases. In addition, unlike rubber liners, Pond Shield is available in eight colors - Black, Clear, Competition Blue, Sky Blue, Forest Green, Tan, Gray and White. Pond Shield is used for waterproofing structured surfaces found in water features such as Koi ponds, pools, fountains, aquariums, salt water tanks, hydroponics, streams, waterfalls, reflecting pools, mini lakes, holding tanks, etc. Easily applied and easy to maintain, for most applications, a single coat application is all that is needed for proper coverage. In addition, your pond will be virtually maintenance free with a surface that algae can be easily wiped off of and is safe for fish and plants. Pond Shield offers both strength and flexibility in a coating, strength and flexibility that is tested from -78° F to 140° F. Pond Shield is an epoxy pond liner that has been specifically designed to bond to porous or abraded materials. With a tensile bond strength stronger than the internal strength of the concrete, your single coat of Pond Shield epoxy will stick to what you apply it to. Over time, hairline cracks can form in concrete, mortar or grout joints. Being flexible, Pond Shield resists mimic cracking and provides the best protection possible in a coating.

Can this product seal a ceramic tile surface? The application is our patio fountain.

Asked by: ScottH
According to the manufacturer: Glazed Tiles: "Use Pond Shield epoxy behind glazed tile to waterproof a fountain or pool. Apply Pond Shield and allow to cure, sand with 60-grit and set the tile in place with polyurethane adhesive or a sticky acrylic thinset." Unglazed Tiles: You can apply it to the tile, but the tile surface needs to feel like 60-grit sandpaper. If need be, the surface should be abraded with a flexible disk. However, depending on the tile, abrading it could damage the design on the tile... Your Mileage May Very. Also, since Pond Shield cures to a glass like finish, you may need to abrade the back of the tile so that whatever adhesive you use, will stick.

I have a plastic holding tank that needs to be reinforced from the inside, would this work or would it crack?

Asked by: Arthur
It would depend on how hard the plastic is, is it outside, and will it be moved. You would have to try it. It dries into like a GLASS almost.

I have an unfinished concrete irrigation tank (actually a septic tank placed above ground), used to irrigate a 5 acre pasture. I want to use this product to seal the seams to reduce weeping of water through cracks at the seams. I do not want to acid etch with muriatic acid, since it is so corrosive, need for respirator, etc. I am thinking of scraping down the seams with a wire brush then clean with vinegar or other concrete cleanser. Any recommendations on using a surface prep besides muriatic acid? Has anyone used this product without acid etching first? Does it adhere well to raw concrete that has not been acid etched? Thanks in advance.
Asked by: Cranky
Absolutely. I have used this on all kinds of concrete, metal, and resin materials, like ponds, yard art, and bird baths without anything more then a wire brush scrub to get off any loose paint or rust or whatever,. It is so thick, that you will have no problem with this product filling any cracks and sealing up surfaces. I even had a concrete bird bath dish that my handyman dropped and cracked in half. I used an aquarium sealant to glue the two pieces back together, then coated it twice with this epoxy and I still use that bird bath 3 years later. The color (blue) has not faded and it has held up perfectly, with the exception of some algae stains.

I needed it to make a reinforced bottom to a glass fish tank. I etched the glass using an electric sander and finished with 60 grit sandpaper. This stuff went on alright, but peeled of alright too. I cured it for two days before returning my tank to normal operations. It took one day for the epoxy to start to peel and two days for half of it to peel. It made the perfect environment to grow some nasty bacteria in my tanks so I broke it all back down and effortlessly peeled it off in a sheet. I feel like it would work properly in other applications, just not this one.

I mixed half of it per instructions and it did get tacky before I got finished using it. Fortunately I was over half finished and the remainder was plenty to finish the job. And it came out beautiful. At first I was a little skeptical because of the tan color but it was perfect. And it covered perfectly. I would and have already recommended this product.

I used it on the lower inside of a block wall before the stucco coat. Fruit tree roots & plants nearby would be poisoned by Bituthene. Photo shows color shift on lower wall where brown coat is over Pond Armor.

Just know that you have to let fresh concrete rest for a month before you use any product, or sulfate will still be leaching out of the surface, and nothing will stick.
