I am befuddled with researching the various buffer pads. There are White, red, black, smooth, waffled, wool, and so on. I am trying to educate myself as to what to by for polishing, glazing, waxing and so on. Nobody seems to discus the differences or the intended use of these various pads. Help, please.

Can I use this to remove dried, old wax on the hood of my car??

Asked by: TrustNoJuan
Actually the first thing I used it for was to remove heavy oxidation from the roof of my 14 year old pick-up caused by the harsh central Texas sun, with clear coat safe rubbing compound. The paint now looks new again.

Can you change the backing plate on the polisher so you could end up using a smaller pad for tighter spaces?

Asked by: Brandon
Yes the backing pad can be changed for a smaller one but you have to change the counterbalance as well since the one that is on it is for 6" pads. One other thing to note is that the backing plate that comes with it is not interchangeable with other pads since the foam pad is glued to it.

4.5 Amp 6 in. Variable Speed Random Orbit Polisher is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 101.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice Polisher / Sander This polisher works well and the has a nice wide range of speeds. It has plenty of power, I never got it to slow or bog down at all. The instructions are a little vague, and are in a "map" type piece of paper rather than a booklet, which is kind of a pain to spread out and read. They are not real clear if you are supposed to use the foam pad directly on the paint or put a bonnet or pad on it. You are supposed to use the foam directly on the paint. The pad is one piece and is glued to the backing pad, it is not attached with hook and loop. When the pad wears out you will need to buy another one. It does use the standard 5/16 x 24 screw thread mount so you can use most any sanding, polishing backing pads. I would be nice if they included a sanding pad also. The cord is a nice length at 10 ft. At the higher speeds (5-6) it does vibrate a lot and will make your fingers buzz. The on off switch does lock on. The switch and the speed controls are not in the most desirable of places, they are a little awkward to operate and the speed control basically takes 2 hands to adjust. It would be nice if it was at the front of the tool where you could reach it while it was running with your thumb or forefinger. Also would be nice if it had a front handle. You can run the polisher with one hand after you get it started by grabbing it top front. It would be nice if the polisher had a spindle lock, that would make changing pads much easier. The tool to hold the spindle only fits one way it will not clear the weight, so you have to find the right spot to insert it. The body of the tool (motor) is a large to grasp easily. Other than not being very ergonomically friendly it works very well and does what it is supposed to do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dependable easy to use polisher Porter-Cable 4.5 Amp 6 in. Variable Speed Random Orbit Polisher is the perfect polisher for beginners and those more experienced. The advantage of variable speed random orbit polishers is they are less likely to damage the paint work with swirls and burn paint from inexperience. This is because they polish in a random ever changing pattern going over different spots unlike straight polishers that go over the exact same area, if you don't move it. This one is a good size polisher and comes with a polishing pad and special thin wrench to attach it. Its got a right or left side handle and is about fifteen inches long. The tool is variable speed from a low of 2,500RPM to apply compound to up to 6,800 RPM for finishing with wax. This is a ruggedly built tool and should hold up for a long time. To be honest I've only used it on my car, haven't done yet any heavy duty work. I suspect most will be doing this kind of waxing on their cars so for that its really good at it. The polisher running at low did a fine job applying the compound, it got out a few small scratches as you'd expect. The final polish wasn't a tiring process at all as it weights under six pounds and I could stretch easily to reach over the entire roof. Note when using, the cord should be placed over your shoulder and don't let it touch the paint as it can deposit crud from the floor that will scratch the paint if the pad goes over it. This size pad did make it difficult to get into very tight spots like around the door trim and headlights so if you're fussy, you'll need some manual elbow grease there or get a smaller pad. If you've been waxing your car all by hand getting an electric polisher is a different experience and this is a good one to start. Overall, for a backyard DIY detailer its a nice tool to have in the trunk of your car along with the cleaning supplies.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Well Made Tool, Lacking Some Basic Features I had been using a much less expensive single speed, 10” car buffer to maintain the beauty and protect the value of my cars, but I was concerned that it was not a more robust design and that it had limited orbital movement, making it less effective at removing grit and road marks, so I decided to try this product. The variable speed offered by this buffer is impressive, so that movement of the buffing head can be varied from a slow swirling action to a high speed cutting action. Because I was applying a paste wax to my car, I used a slower speed in order not to harm the surface finish. The polisher did a nice job of applying wax minimizing swirl marks (see picture), and the compact head design allowed me to more thoroughly apply wax into and over my cars sharp body lines, something my other polisher had not done as well due to its larger buffing surface. It has a 10’ electric cord which may be ample in some cases, but still likely to require an extension cord to reach around most cars; however this length should keep the extension cord connection from banging against your car surface (a good thing). The product is supplied only with a foam applicator pad and small flat installation wrench, so the usefulness of the product, out-of-the-box is quite limited. The product instructions state that the pad “is designed for product application only,” and that product residue should be removed with a soft cotton cloth. So it seems that as it is packaged for sale, this product is limited to applying cleaning and waxing chemicals to surface finishes. If you wish to extend the usefulness of the tool to sanding or buffing, additional accessories must be purchased. In practical terms, this is essentially a “bare tool” purchase. The buffing pad is secured to a flat plastic part with an integrated 5/16” threaded bolt. The bolt screws into the head of the polisher (see picture). A small flat wrench is supplied to hold the receiving nut in place on the tool head (see picture), so that the buffing pad can be screwed into place. Although I experienced no difficulty installing or removing the buffing pad, it’s disappointing that a tool of this caliber does not have a built-in finger-actuated spindle lock; further, there is no wrench storage built-into the tool itself, meaning the wrench needs to be stored in a place where you’ll remember to find it later. The fact that the space under the pad is very narrow, requires a thin wrench to access the fastener (if you manage to loose the tool that is supplied, you are not likely to have a replacement in your tool box). When it came time to clean-up, there was no guidance provided regarding the proper method to use to preserve the integrity of the foam applicator pad – only a caution not to mix products on the same pad. So, a question remains, can the pad be washed – or should it be rinsed – or should it be placed in a moisture proof container containing some chemical residue – or should it be disposed? The user’s guide is silent on this, but an internet search suggested soaking it in soapy water for a while and then squeezing it clean and dry. I tried this, but it did little to remove the wax residue (see picture). In my opinion, costing about 10% of the tool price the replacement pads should not be a “throw-away.” My intuition tells me that the wax residue may eventually harden on the pad, and act as an abrasive the next time you go to use it to polish the car. The polishers’ light weight made it easy to use, but on vertical surfaces it did require two hands (one positioned on the body, the other on the auxiliary handle) to guide and hold the tool to the surface. Because of its design I could not substitute my thigh for my hand to press the buffer against the car body as I did with my other buffer. This polisher is about the same weight as my other one. In summary, this appears to be a well- made product, but its lack of basic features (spindle lock, wrench storage) are disappointing and at the cost of what is essentially a bare tool there may be better choices if your primary need is routine car maintenance.

Works exactly as expected, not a ton of power until you get it up to the 4-6 speed range but that's alright since I'm sure you'd use these lower speeds for applying waxes and glazes; I didn't try since I have a separate machine for waxing. I've had the polisher for a couple weeks now and have used on 1 car and a jet ski so I can't speak to it's durability and longevity but I don't have any concerns with those since it seems to be a fairly sturdy unit. It's nice that it doesn't shake you into submission while you're using it either, my hands and arms never got numb or tingly once in the few hours use, like happens with my cheap RO buffer/waxer. A couple features that are lacking: cord strain relief to prevent the unit from unplugging from the extension cord when you're moving around the vehicle, like what came with my waxer, which is just a strap at the end of the cord and works like the one in the attached image and a button to lock the unit from spinning when changing backing pads or at least some way to attach the wrench to the unit so it doesn't get lost. My Porter-Cable grinder has the wrench slide right into the handle which is very convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great I had very old polisher that was a hand me down from my dad. It was bigger and much heavier, being older. This one is much easier to handle. The only thing I've used it for so far was to repair the finish on the top of my x-cab pick-up that became oxidized by the harsh Central Texas sun. Out of sight out of mind. One day I looked at it and worked very hard with clear coat rubbing compound. It removed some of it but left quite a bit. With this polisher and the same rubbing compound it quickly removed the rest of the oxidation and now it looks like new paint, though the truck turned 14 in February.

Easy to use. I have it set up with 4" foam pads for tight spots/detail and it works great. Feels like a solid tool. About what I expected from a porter-cable product. Would recommend on cost vs quality alone. Planning to run 7.5" pads from Chemical Guys too as the tool is recommended for the purpose. I doubt you will find a better tool for the price. I plan to use it for about 30-40 hours on a boat project and then it will sit. An everyday detail person may have a different perspective on this. Just my 2 cents.

For a few vehicles a day, five days a week, they are known to fail.
