Answer:
If your going to remove the popcorn. You can Tape a 6 or 8 inch knife to the end of a shop vac. using the larger attachments at the end. That way when u scrap the popcorn off it will get sucked up into the shop vac as you go. Making less to clean up later.

Answer:
As a drywall contractor my best advice for popcorn removal is lightly spraying the ceiling with water, then scraping the popcorn off. I've tried the sanding it first method before, and it takes too much time, and is very hard on the sander. Once the texture is removed, then the sander can be used.

Answer:
I used it with a standard shop vac. You might need an adapter to connect it depending on the size of your hose input. Also, it's important to make sure the filter doesn't get clogged. I used a high-efficiency filter and it worked fine. There are some dust collection bags that are sold for this purpose, but I was turned-off by the negative reviews on those.

Drywall Sander with Dust Collection (Tool-Only) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best thing since sliced bread This tool is a must for finishing drywall. It eliminates the most miserable aspect of drywalling - the sanding and the dust. It must be used it with a bag-type shop vac to control the dust, so this could result in an additional purchase if you don't already have one. This tool is not "dustless" but it greatly reduces the dust to a manageable level. The only downside, if there is one, is the cost. Most high quality and effective tools are costly and this is no exception. My son and I both have large multi-room jobs to do so we split the cost and are co-owners of the tool. These tools can be rented, but having one on hand through the course of a job and not having to worry about returning it by the deadline is well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money I bought this item because I was doing a kitchen remodel while still using the kitchen daily. I put up new drywall on walls and ceiling and used this sander without getting dust in the kitchen or the rest of the house. It is relatively light ( e.g. ceiling use) and extremely easy to use on walls (with the flexible sanding head). It has multiple speeds depending on how much "dried mud" you have to remove. You may need a hose adaptor if using a Rigid Vacuum; Home Depot has adapter kits for @$8.00. I would buy replacement sander sheets after purchasing the vac as the ones I bought online don't fit exactly right. It makes sanding walls and ceilings quick work and the sander with a fine grit pad and slow speed is very forgiving- takes an effort to damage the drywall paper or gouge the sheets.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for "Popcorn" Ceiling Removal Popcorn ceiling removal is messy...no way to get around that! The Porter Cable Drywall sanding tool eliminates about 95% of that mess, I would recommend the investment in this well built tool for that task. Weighing a little over eight pounds the tool seems manageable for overhead work at first however in no time at all it becomes heavy and hard to handle. If you are under say six feet tall you will need to work off a platform or ladder to keep the head of the machine flat to your work surface in order to get a good seal necessary for the vacuum action to work properly. I would suggest to use a "fine" filter on your utility vac, empty vac and clean filter as necessary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Waaaay better than hand sanding and much less dust My husband got this to help with sanding ceilings. Yes, it's a big, clunky tool, but he loves it. It's not too heavy, and it made sanding a breeze. Does a great job of sucking up the dust while you sand. He's definitely glad he got this sander. Comes with only one sheet of sandpaper, so you may want to pick up some extras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes drywall sanding a pleasure Very efficient, lightweight and virtually dustless. Used only one disc to sand joints on 30 sheets of drywall. Very short learning curve if the included instructions are followed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clearly saves money on labor I've rented this unit many times before I bought my own, and even with rental costs, this saved me money spent on labor to waste hours tediously sanding drywall. I should have bought this many years ago, but it pays for itself in one or two jobs. I didn't buy the Porter Cable vacuum, but it works just fine with my HEPA shop vac.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised I think there is more dust from walking on your carpet than sanding with this sander. Just one time of using it will pay for itself. Just remember to put in a fine dust filter in your vacuum and remember to clean it after sanding and you won't have any problems.
