Product Overview

Post Protector is a slide-on barrier system protecting in-ground posts from decay by eliminating soil-to-wood or concrete-to-wood contact. Decay occurs when the following conditions exist: Moisture saturation of wood fiber, Oxygen, Temperature 40 -100°F. These conditions enable the soil dwelling micro-organisms, to colonize the post using the wood fiber as their food source. This consumption of the wood fiber is otherwise known as decay or rot. Post Protector allows for typical post-in-ground foundations without the decay causing micro-organisms ever having access to the post. The treatment in a pressure treated post is a pesticide used in an effort to make the wood fiber an undesirable food source for these micro-organisms. The treatment is effective initially but loses its effectiveness as the chemical migrates or leaches from the post over time. Post Protector eliminates this chemical migration and keeps the treatment with the post where it belongs. Common applications are decks, pergolas, fences, pole barns, or any post-in-the-ground project. Available in 4x4, 4x6 & 6x6 in 42 in. and 60 in. lengths.

When installing a post with this protective sleeve , should the bottom of the post be set in concrete or a few inches of material that will allow trapped moisture to wick from the very bottom , just below the section incase in concrete ? This is for a south Florida location, where the water level varies from 5 to 7 feet below the surface .
Asked by: Jim
I called Post Protector and got a very helpful gentleman. Yes, he had me put rock in the hole first, then around the post, then concrete and the the dirt. You also want to drill a couple small drainage holes in the bottom rib.

Can this be used/cut to fit around existing post to a pole building in order to apply a barrier before pouring slab?

Asked by: Northpole
The whole idea is to have an impervious 'moat' around the timber; if you cut it lengthwise to 'clad' an existing timber, you've defeated the design! And you're wasting $. Now if you're not going to use it as intended, why not but some sono/quik tubes for your purpose?

After a drunk guy in a pickup truck went through our field fence with wood corner posts, I noticed the bottoms of the pulled out of the ground 4X4 posts had a lot of bad rot. So when I went to put in a new address post, these caught my attention and ordered one to fit the 6X6 sign post I had made. Shipped very timely, the product is simple to apply. To be sure of the application on a free standing 6X6, I called the company and visited with a very helpful, knowledgeable person on how to proceed with the Post Protector installation. I am a probably what you would call a beginner DIY and found the instruction very easy to follow. Post is in the ground and looks great! Nice to have insurance that this post will last out here!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Met my expectations This protector arrived pretty quickly. To better understand the instructions, I called the number listed on the insert. The nice gentleman who answered was a clear expert in posts and protectors. He was very helpful. The sleeve installed quickly and the set screws were easily installed after pilot holes were drilled. The heavy duty sleeve material I expect will hold up well over time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked for Me! I had to rebuild a rotting 6x6 cedar mailbox post by scabbing on a pressure treated wood base made out of 5/4 stock onto a heavily rotted cedar post. The cedar post was very expensive to replace, After adding the pressure treated wood to the cedar that remained, I then covered the rebuilt base with this product and it worked perfectly. I dug a new hole, since the old hole still had a concrete anchor. I backfilled with a sand-gravel mix tamped around the rebuilt post and protector. The corrugations on the outside of the protector seemed to do well to anchor the post. I expect that this protector will provide many years of service and in addition, I easily trimmed the protector to stick about 8 inches above ground in order to protect the cedar post from further weathering at the ground line and to reduce damage from the lawnmower and weedeater.
