Product Overview

Description: Post Shield makes 4x4 wood post installation, replacement, and repair faster, safer, and simpler. Its design lets the wood breathe, lengthening post life, while protecting the post from standing water, weed eaters and mowers, insects in the dirt, and even chemicals in concrete and asphalt. With Post Shield, installation and replacement takes just minutes, with no "bracing" required to set a post plumbed and perfectly vertical. Post Shield is for use Every Where a 4x4 wood post goes in the ground. Though it is not structural (the post itself provides that function) it is designed for use with fences, deck footings, gates, retaining walls, planter boxes, mailboxes, and signs.

  • Fits a true 3 1/2- 3 9/16 in. square wood post
  • 28 in. Long, may be stacked for deeper applications
  • 4 Sleeves per pack
  • UV impregnated PVC construction
  • Green product and recyclable
  • Posts last longer, they breathe, water drains and evaporates while concrete, dirt, and asphalt won't come in contact with the post, keeping those damaging chemicals away from the wood
  • Plumb posts in seconds, just a level on the top before inserting the post and it will be perfectly plumbed and vertical, no more bracing a post while concrete dries or atanding on a ladder to trim post length
  • Gate center supports can be removed quickly for use with RV, boat, or trailer entry and exit
  • Mailboxes, raised flower beds, pet areas; all installed and replaced easily and safely
  • Color blends with nature, but is paint-able, if desired

Answer:
No - it is supposed to wick up moisture. You use stone at the bottom to help with moisture flow (up and down). There are ridges internal to allow for air/moisture flow.

Answer:
If the bottom was sealed, it would fill with water and the post would just rot. Not even PT posts can stand up to being submerged in water.

Answer:
No, and it shouldn't be. The whole point of the product is to provide a place for water to drain down the post and into aggregate below the PS and keep the bottom of the post from getting wet.

Answer:
Once you pour concrete you just made a swimming pool. There is a gap large enough to where the wind blows soil into the gap over time, now you have a planter box. We had weeds growing out the side before my wife went out and put silicon around the gap.

Answer:
No bottom cap is put on specifically so the 4x4 post (which should still be treated and will protect it alone) can release moisture after rain/watering.

No, it's not, but I bought them anyway. I had hoped that they might be, but the instructions say to add gravel in the hole for drainage. I think if the bottom were sealed, it would be a big plus.

I would use two. Not sure what the manufacturer recommends but I see how this would work for "double" lengths.

Answer:
The point of this is to protect the post at and around ground level. Below that, excepting the bottom of the post if you do it right, concrete protects the post.

This works for a "traditional" 4x4 post. It would not work for a true 4 inch piece of lumber.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 41 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by They are unsightly and a waste of money! My neighbor- Bless her heart had to have them after this being the 3rd fence we have replaced between us in 20 years. We had to use silicon to fill the gaps. They cracked where we used a rot board on the bottom of the fence- they are plastic. They are not made to keep a fence from rot they are made to be able to put another post in when it does rot. They fill with water...now why would I want to tear my fence part in another 7 years and replace it. I did my research and actually found a product that works which we bought and used on the other side. Seals the post completely to prevent rot,but I will not mention it here out of respect. Waste of money, very ugly and they are not all the same exact dimension. Can not nail into them without completely cracking them. We are going to remove the Sleeves and try and salvage our fence. My advise is do not waste your money, worse you will not be happy and stare at them for however many years they last wishing you would have just sloped the concrete away from the post. Im 66 years old and am that unhappy to take the time to write this review, I dont even like to write deposit slips at the bank. I like The Home Depot too, but those other reviews I just read, are from the people that make them! The only thing they would be good for is the guy who said he made a removable section, but it will wobble. May 4, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by 4 stars if not bent... I bought a couple orders prior to this review, and had an overall good view of this product. The only downside at the time being was the price point (at 10 bucks per unit, the cost seems pretty excessive) and the fact that I had to wait for shipping (it took about 10 days for the first order). Otherwise, the product was as described and worked how I imagined. I recommended it to a few people in fact. I'd give it, at that time, a 4 star rating. (If the price was better, 5 stars) The second time I order a few more- chalking up the cash for an item that I had now put some trust into. Unfortunately, after waiting for them to arrive, the units where not square in shape. They were warped in such bad condition that you could not possibly put anything close to a 4x4 into the sleeve. The material is thick enough that you can not bend it back into the proper shape, so that tells me that they left the warehouse/store that way, which is very poor service in my opinion. It's also frustrating to think I may have to wait many weeks to get a proper order back, by which time I was hoping to have my project complete. I have not yet returned the item, because of the great inconvenience, but will have to go through that process, so for the time being, I have to give the product 2 stars. If this had been my only order, I would give it 1 star, but the prior order tells me that the product, when sent in proper condition, is good. April 15, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Appears this may actually work as advertised This was very easy to install on posts - some posts were a tighter fit than others though (from moisture content, milling of posts, ...). Easy directions to follow. One can review the overall concept and see how it is supposed to work to keep out moisture. Only time will tell if it works as it's advertised. I would definitely recommend it to others and use on future projects where you are putting posts in the ground. August 9, 2016

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by So far, so ---- Thoughts so far on installing these PS to make fence July 21, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Good quality for a useless plastic sleeve Sturdy construction, but EXTERNAL measurement is 4" x 4" which means the interior size is too small to fit a standard 4x4 post inside without shaving down the post. (Which is a major pain for the bottom 28 inches of each post.) These are heading to the trash can instead of the ground. July 12, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not what I wanted Product works as a sleeve over the 4x4, and fits well with no problem, but I wanted a sleeve with and enclosed bottom. Beware if you are looking for a "post protector" brand enclosed bottom sleeve, this is not it. May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome invention! While trying to figure out how to set wooden posts w/o the worry of them rotting and having to dig them up to replace them, I came across these little jewels. Simply pour the concrete around these sleeves, then you can remove/replace wooden posts with ease! Only drawback is you have to buy a package of 4. May 24, 2016
