Product Overview

At 20-30% of home energy consumption, water heating is typically the 2nd highest energy demand. The Power-Pipe can dramatically cut water heating costs and reduce total home energy consumption by 5-10%. It works by using outgoing warm drain water to pre-heat incoming cold fresh water so your water heater doesn’t have to work as hard. The Power-Pipe will typically pay for itself in as little as 2 years, and may qualify for Government or Utility grants. The Power-Pipe’s performance has been tested in accordance with the CSA B55.1 standard and independently verified by Intertek. The Power-Pipe is safe for drinking water, requires no maintenance, has no moving parts, increases effective hot water capacity, extends water heater life, and can be used with any type of standard plumbing system and comes with a 10 year warranty. Furthermore, Power-Pipe technology is proven, practical, affordable, and in use in many thousands of homes. A Power-Pipe will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 1 ton/year per household in the average family of four.

  • Lowest cost and shortest payback on your money amongst water heating saving technologies

Customer Questions & Answers

Can it be installed horizonaly?

Asked by: Dan
The installation guide says: "A Power-Pipe must be installed in a VERTICAL orientation. If the drainpipe is not vertical, additional plumbing based on site conditions and/or special connectors will be necessary to provide a vertical orientation."

Customer Reviews

3 in. x 48 in. Drain Water Heat Recovery Unit is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real energy saver I purchased one from HD as part of The Ontario energy saving plan upgrade program in 2009. I bought the 60 inch size as I maximized the amt of heat recovery. I can't get over how efficient it is. I installed it myself in about 2 hrs and ran it directly into my hot water tank. I insulated the power pipe and the copper pipes going in and out of it. Water going into bottom of the unit is cold but when it comes out the top it is nice and warm right into HWT. This is after you have say a shower or dishwasher being used. It saves energy by preheating the water which saves wear and tear on the hot water tank. Definitely a must have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review of the 48" Power-Pipe After hearing about the Power-Pipe and its benefits, I decided to purchase one at the store. Found that I could only order it online. Being overly cautious, I did and it arrived quickly and painlessly. Although my box didn't come with instructions, I was able to find them on the Power-Pipe website with ease. Installation was for the most part a breeze. Cut out existing pipe, install rubber sleeves, install Power-Pipe and tighten clamps. Tested seals first before connecting cold water lines = OK. The only part I disliked was the 3/4" inlet and outlet copper pipes were bent when manufactured. This caused a problem with the quick connect pieces I used which leaked when installed. I therefore installed a pre-soldered coupler and 6" extension 3/4" straight pipe. This solved the problem. Took some pictures as shown. Before I wrapped the Power-Pipe, I measured the incoming cold water at ~11deg C and the outgoing warmed water at ~21deg C. I was able to hook up both my showers to this one drain and with a 5 person household, I am looking at some good savings and longer hot water usage from my tank. This installation to me is a no brainer & payback should be fast!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must buy! I'm very satisfied with my purchase! Product is well built and was easy to install. (sadly they didn't have instructions in the box) I know I'll be saving $$$ from now till I sell my house. Does make a big temperature change from when it enters to where it exit the pipe to the hot water heater.
