Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 20A to 30A Adapter - Works Just Fine This adapter works just fine to convert a 20A/240v generator output to a 30A/240v power inlet. The description of this adapter is clear, but The Home Depot site should include a photo of the back side of this adapter for those who like the reassurance of a visual match. The unseen back side contains a 4-prong plug which is an L14-20P, or 240v/20A. This adapter sticks out of whatever you plug it into and then you plug a dangling, heavy generator cord into the end that's jutting out. It seems to me that this puts a lot of stress on the connection that's farthest from the dangling cord. I think a flexible 6" adapter would have been better, but no doubt would have cost much more than this all-in-one molded adapter. When would you use this adapter? It's for when you need to connect a lower wattage generator to a 30A cable or power inlet box. For example, if your generator is 3,000 watts and 240v then your output connector is likely an L14-20P. If your house has a 30A power inlet box (such as the popular Reliance Controls PB30) then you'll either need to make a custom generator power cord, or buy a standard cord and this adapter. You could buy a 20A or a 30A cord and then put this adapter on the generator end (with 30A cord) or the inlet box end (with 20A cord). I'd recommend buying the 30A cord for this app, as the larger conductors will easily handle the smaller load and the 30A cord be reused should you ever upgrade to a larger generator. January 30, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solid quality at a good price. Does the job. While most generators may have a 30 amp outlet, if you have a generator with only a 20 amp outlet this may be a necessary accessory. Good quality. Good price. December 2, 2012
