Product Overview

The PowerSmith PAVC101 Ash Vacuum is specifically designed to clean warm and cool ash out of fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves and barbecue grills, something that household vacuum cleaners and regular utility vacs cannot do. The secret is the two-layer filter. The outer layer is heat resistant, allowing the machine to pick up warm ash up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The inner layer is designed to trap the finest dust and ash. The metal hose and canister on the PowerSmith ash vacuum make the whole machine heat-resistant. And just in case, the motor has an auto-shutoff feature which turns off the machine if heat inside the canister ever reaches dangerous levels. A powerful 10 Amp motor is another reason why this ash vacuum doesn’t clog like the competition. But it runs at a quiet noise level of only 79 dB. The 5.2 Gal. canister holds up to 3 Gal. of ashes. An ash level indicator shows how full the canister is at any time. The PowerSmith ash vacuum comes equipped with extension wands and a floor and carpet nozzle so it can be used as a regular utility vac. Casters and a 16 ft. extension cord give you lots of mobility. And if you switch the hose from the intake PORT to the exhaust outlet, this vacuum turns into a blower. Three tools in one: an ash vacuum, a utility vac and a blower.

Can you vacuum up hot burning embers?

We use a wood-burning fireplace to keep warm, so we have to remove the ash build up pretty frequently; can we suck up hot coals/embers with this thing? Thanks

Got this about a month back and used it first time after wood fire the last time it got cold couple weeks back. I was looking forward to having this as I was hoping that it will make my job of cleaning up after wood burning fire much easier. Well, the unit I had did not work as I had expected. The locking mechanism of the cover/lid was loose so it was not air tight. And, half way through vacuuming, the force of sucking was completely lost and the machine on the top of the cover/lid got extremely hot to the point that it stopped working. Ended up cleaning up the old fashion manual way.

It shows full while sucking up the ashes, however, the cannister is not full. The vacuum still has plenty of suction power even I cleaned our pellet stove with it 4 times before emptying the vacuum. I recommend this to everyone.

I have mainly used it to vacuum ashes from about 2 inches on the lip of my wood stove so that the ashes don't fall out or get stuck when the door closes. I do this each time I am adding wood to the burning fire. The vacuum has done an effective job, and the filter has prevented ash from blowing out into the room. While vacuuming, I occasionally pull in a small glowing spark, and from time to time I have inadvertently sucked up a small live coal or ember, So far, the combination of the metal lined hose, the metal container and the heat resistant filter have prevented any problems. I purchased an additional filter with the vacuum, but so far, the original filter is intact and undamaged. I'm really pleased with the performance of this product.

One small glitch is the "FULL" shows full after every cleaning of my Thelin pellet stove. I learned that you can clear this when you have shut vacuum off and then just pick up the machine about 6-8 inches and drop it firmly several times. This knocks the ash off the filter into the bottom of canister ans saves having to clean filter after every use.

The 4' hose is a bit short so I bought the 10' hose and leave the vacuum outside a nearby window. I did not see dust coming from the unit and it could be used indoors, but I prefer to leave it outside. It runs very quiet compared to most shop vacs and has a secondary motor/exhaust filter above the ash filter. This motor/exhaust filter should stay clean for a long time if your main filter is working good. Suction remained good until I was done. My stove opening is small and the metal fitting that the tools attach to, is too long to get inside stove real well. I bought a few feet of cheap flex hose that fits vacuum and attachments. (see pics) Toilet paper ignites at about 450 degrees, so people who have caught their filter on fire, or cause vacuum to shut down from overheating, have a problem with common sense. Use on "cool or warm" stove, empty often, keep filters clean and this unit should last a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Service tech I'm a hvac tech, needed a new soot vac and didn't want to spend out on a high end vac, this was very reasonable on its price so I gave it a try. Cleaned a few furnaces and boilers with it. Works just as good as a soot master vac.

Cleaning the wood stove the first time was fabulous - no dust, nor ash in the air anywhere . . . Felt a little silly cleaning it out the first time, thought the filter bag was to be full, but that's what keeps all the dust from flying around like a regular vacuum . . . duh! Too bad it was windy when we emptied the canister into our ash pail outside, our dog was down wind.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great idea if it worked It stopped working in the middle of my 1st use I thought it over heated. I was cleaning wood stove with cold ash only emptied 2x with atleast 10 min in between use. Never worked again. Home depot was great about taking it back with dirty hoses. So if rating product only if give it a 1 of 10 for the idea of it. Hope depot gets a 10!
