The tiller will start fine, but when I put it under a load, it will only run for 5 to 20 seconds, then it dies. It will start again after a brief rest

Answer:
We suggest checking the transmission lubricant oil level. The transmission causes high friction under load and could possibly kill the engine if the incorrect amount of lubricant is not present. You will need to remove the upper plug on the side of the transmission and fill with 90 wt gear oil if the level is low. I am a member of the Home Depot Seeds program. They listed a Powermate 21in. 140cc tiller. Model# PFTT140. Unfortunately they did not inform me of the February campaign in time to choose your Powermate tiller. I have been a gardener for 50 yrs. and feel that I would make a ideal reviewer for your gear driven 4 cycle tiller. My previous tiller was a Troybilt gear driven tiller with driveshaft and worked for over 20 yrs. before wearing out. I was curious if you have any of these tillers for use and review.

Answer:
During extensive testing of front tine tillers, the main reason for a “stall” of the engine is when a rock or root “jams” the tines. The ability of the front tine tiller to penetrate hard ground is more a function of the weight and forward motion of the tiller. It is not limited by engine power.

How many inches at a time is really a function of the weight of the tiller and the forward motion. The function of the drag bar is to be able to slow down the forward motion so that deep tilling can occur is hard ground conditions.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Powerful I live in California, so this tiller was shipped with a Kohler engine. (nice surprise #1) It assembled easily and after adding oil & gas it started on the first pull. (nice surprise #2) I couldn't wait to use it, so I steered it into my vegetable garden and it started digging to fricken China! (nice surprise #3) I wasn't expecting that much power. The plastic wheels are big enough to go up stairs (backwards) without scraping the tines and they're held on with pins, not threaded onto an axle. This will make replacing them a much easier job. I waited to write this review until after I had really tested the tiller's power. It went through DG that hadn't been turned in years like a dream. Pick and shovel bounced off, this tiller powered through better than I could have hoped. I've had belt-driven 5HP front-tine tillers in the past. This tops them all by far. You will not regret buying this tiller. June 12, 2011
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ughh I didn't even run half of a gallon of gas through this tiller, and the tines are gone!!! The soil had already been disced, and this is an existing garden, with no rock. Everything else about the tiller is fine. The tines are just the worst piece of junk, I have ever seen. You would think they are plastic. March 13, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is a great tiller This is a great tiller, I used it to till my front yard to prepare for Sod. This thing started up on the 1st pull. I was impressed at how easy it was to assemble and then till my yard. I would recommend this tiller. Thanks July 18, 2012
