Rated 3.0 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Exorbitant Repair Time/Lack-Luster Cutomer Service I ordered this generator new in mid-December 2013 as a back-up power supply for the occasional storm-caused outages we have here. I found it had a wiring problem straight out of the box. Something was causing it to discharge the battery in just a matter of hours. Thought at first it might just be the battery was not fully charged and had depleted during storage but after multiple recharges and subsequent depletions I called Powermate and got a list of approved warranty repair facilities. The first repairman (20 miles away) said they were backed up 5 - 6 weeks but the next one I called (50 miles away) said he could get it back to me in a week or so, two weeks if he had to order parts, so on January 6, 2014 I took it to that guy. The battery was shot from all the multiple deep discharges so I didn't bother taking the battery in with the generator as it was no good and a week later I took it to the local recycler. Long story short, the problem was apparently difficult to track down until the repairman found a tiny diode buried deep inside the generator itself that appeared to be the culprit but was not on the wiring schematics that Powermate sent him. That did the job, but in the meantime they had my generator for almost 3 months because Powermate wanted to try "just one more thing" and I went through several ice storm power outages with no back-up generator. I was told that the repairman mentioned to Powermate after about the 3rd attempt at a fix that it would be easier to just just give me another generator but they weren't going for that. Then, to add insult to injury Powermate refused to replace the battery that had been eaten up by the faulty wiring because I had not allowed them to test it first...as if I would lie to get another battery that is useless for anything other than the generator. I am not a happy camper. I have another, smaller Powermate that I purchased almost 20 years ago that has run like a champ all these years, but that was when Coleman was selling them. Apparently the new guys in charge aren't that interested in customer service or backing their product. Not so sure I will stick with Powermate in the future unless they make this right by me. I can't rate it higher on Quality or Value because at this time I have had no opportunity to use the thing, and I'm a bit ticked for obvious reasons. Maybe 8 months from now when next winter comes along I will get some use out of it and change my ratings. April 6, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Satisfied After lots of checking on prices and features, decided on Powermate generator over other brands. Seemed to have the most features, best overall ratings and highest wattage per dollar. Order arrived via EstesTrucking 5 days after ordering. Driver unloaded it and put it in garage --- it's pretty heavy! Thanks, driver. Unpacking, reading instructions and initial assembly (wheels and handles) took only about 30 minutes. The battery for the electric starter was a different story. Very difficult to access battery terminals and install wires. Also, picture in instruction manual has the terminals labeled backwards, or maybe the battery had been installed backwards. Could be a potential problem if you're not careful. After about 20 minutes of trying to attach the negative wire to the battery with no success, finally just removed the battery. This way I could at least get to the terminals, but installing the wire was still troublesome. Instruction manual does not indicate how much oil to put in crankcase ---- just fill until it overflows (typical of many small engines). FYI, it holds just a bit over one quart. Filled the tank with gas, put in the key, cranked it using the electric starter and it started immediately. Shut it down and cranked it by hand and it restarted immediately. After hand cranking it, I think the electric starter will be worth the trouble of hooking up the battery. It takes a hefty pull! Checked all the outlets and they work. Fortunately, haven't had to use it for any extended period so can't comment on this aspect. Nevertheless, overall, very satisfied. August 3, 2012
