Questions & Answers

Does this appliance use a "Hot Surface Oven Ignition"? If not what type of oven ignition does it use?

I am looking to use this stove in an offgrid application. What does "spark Ignition" mean? will the stove and oven work if the electricity goes off?
Asked by: Larry
If you are off the grid, DON'T BUY THIS ONE. Sadly, this oven uses a glow bar for oven ignition, and contrary to The Home Depot's description, the unit uses a lot of electricity when the oven is lit, and the oven cannot be lit with a match without AC power. From what I have been able to determine, only the battery spark ignition Premier ranges are now suitable for off-grid use. I found out the hard way. I ordered this one and didn't figure it out until I got the range and read the instruction manual. Call Premier and talk to a tech rep before you purchase any of their products. Also download and read the instruction manual online. You might instead consider the Hotpoint cordless range for much less money. Amana may make one, also. The Premier may be the only Made in USA choice, however.

Customer Reviews

30 in. 3.91 cu. ft. Freestanding Sealed Burner Spark Ignition Gas Range in Biscuit is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from YOU WILL JUST HATE THE BLACK COLOR AS IT SHOWS EVERY FINGER PRINT. WE HAVE THE BLACK AND WHITE AN... YOU WILL JUST HATE THE BLACK COLOR AS IT SHOWS EVERY FINGER PRINT. WE HAVE THE BLACK AND WHITE AND THE WHITE PART IS EXCELLENT. Buy this in all white and you won't be able to find a better range on the market. The white griddle cover just make the stove complete. You can't get a griddle cover with the GE or that would be the other one you would want to compare. nI will put a high score here ONLY BECAUSE IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN AVAILABLE IN ALL WHITE. I DON'T SEE THAT COLOR LISTED TODAY.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Made in the USA! I own this sealed burner spark ignition range. I purchased the "T" model, meaning the oven ignition is "Thermocouple" spark ignition, not a glow plug ignition. In a power outage the oven as well as the top burners can be lit with a match. Not so with the standard "Glow Plug" ignition that is standard on ALL other brand names. YOU MUST SPECIAL ORDER (up to 30 day wait) THIS "T - THERMOCOUPLE" OPTION from Premier. This is the ONLY company that sells the Thermocouple oven options. This model has sealed burners, a clock/timer, oven light and window, and broiler pan. It comes set up for Natural Gas, yet is easily converted to propane use with 1/2" and 7/8" open end wrenches, phillips and narrow flat head screwdrivers, and 7mm socket wrench in 5 steps shown in videos at the Premier Appliance website. The top burners can be easily adjusted for very low simmer output. The oven temp was spot-on. This range is made in the USA and has the same warranty as the imported models sold via GE, Hotpoint, Frigidaire, etc. All repair and replacement parts are available via the factory should you ever need them. This is a solid, attractive, no frills range with enough options to make using it convenient. AND in a power failure the oven as well as the top burners can be lit with a match. This range can also be used off-grid/solar. I'm quite happy and recommend it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Item not as described. I purchased this range for my off-the-grid house. I based my purchase on the title "Spark Ignition" and the second-from-the bottom bullet item, "...oven can be lit with a match or lighter in the event of and [sic] power outage." Neither of these are accurate. It is true for the cooktop burners, but NOT the oven burner. Evidently these instead describe a discontinued T prefix Premier range. The range instead has a glow bar igniter for the oven burner, just like almost every other gas range on the market. The glow bar stays on, drawing hundreds of watts of electricity the entire time the oven is lit. If you need an oven that can be match-lit, choose one of the battery spark cordless ranges from Premier. Hotpoint also makes a cordless, battery spark ignition range. At the time of this posting there is another 5 star review. However, if you read carefully, the reviewer instead describes the discontinued T (thermocouple) range. I did not even connect the range. I opened the box and read the manual. In my cursory examination, I noted a couple of shortcomings. The oven gasket is a very flimsy fold of silicone rubber supported only by the two ends across the top. A cross-brace in the back of the oven could be bent with gentle hand pressure. I managed to get The Home Depot store to return the range only after I got a store manager and a customer service rep from homedpot.com to speak to each other on my cellphone to end the run-around. I talked to no less than 10 different people at two different The Home Dopots and on homedpot.com to get the item returned. The kind folks at Premier were knowledgeable but not at all helpful with the return.
