Questions & Answers

Can this product be used on a pressure treated wood deck?

Asked by: username
Yes! Preserva Wood can be applied to pressure treated wood. We suggest that you allow the wood to air dry for 3 to 4 weeks, so that any extra moisture in the wood has an opportunity to evaporate. This will make the wood more receptive to the stain and it will do a better job of being absorbed.

Can this product be used on teak decks (Brazilian Teak)

Asked by: Sandy
Yes, with caution! There are many contractors that use Preserva Wood to treat Brazilian hardwoods. The key to a successful application is to treat the wood as if you were staining furniture, because it is a hardwood and will not absorb very much stain. Clean and prepare the wood as per the instructions on the can. Apply the stain sparingly, either with a stain pad or oil based brush and then REMOVE any excess stain that does not penetrate into the wood within the first 20 minutes after application. Because hardwoods do not absorb much stain, expect a spread rate of about 800 square feet per gallon.

how often can we re seal, it has faded to a white instead of the golden color when first applied, The wood is beautiful cedar

Asked by: EJD
You should allow the deck to weather for at least 1 year to 18 months and then give it a good cleaning with a detergent based cleaner. At that time, if small droplets of water cast upon a dry deck are absorbed into the wood, then you can apply a very light application of one of our tinted stains for color retention. The CLEAR product that you used is formulated to protect your wood from moisture damage, while allowing the wood to age naturally over time. The label on the CLEAR says that it will allow the wood to "gray" naturally. If color retention is your objective, we suggest that you use one of the tinted versions of Preserva Wood. Our transparent stains are very lightly pigmented, to retain color and enhance the natural beauty of the wood, while providing additional UV protection.

Thin to use with a pump sprayer?

I have a manual 1.5 Gal pump sprayer. Do I thin Preservawood Pacific Redwood color to apply it to a deck rail? With what and how much is the ratio?
Asked by: JustDoIt
Preserva Wood can be used "as is" and does NOT need to be thinned in order to be sprayed. Preserva Wood is naturally very thin and will easily spray through either a mechanical pump spraying system, or an inexpensive pump sprayer. Regarding your deck railing, please be sure to back brush after you spray the railing. Be sure to brush any excess stain into areas that will absorb the stain, as well as brushing out any runs. Lastly, please be aware of any wind that may be present while you are spraying the stain. Oil based stains are very light and will carry easily in the wind. Try to apply when there is no breeze and always be aware of where any overspray might land.

Used this product on a brand new cedar deck last summer and over the winter it turned moldy black. I built my neighbor a deck and used it one hers and it did the same thing to hers. Power washing did nothing. Now I am faced with painting it a solid color or sanding the entire deck down again. Either way, YUK.

I applied it according to the directions. After three weeks, the stain is still sticky. I called the company to let them know. Of course, they blamed it on factors beyond their control. Do not buy this product. It causes more harm than good.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from First "clear" option I have ever found After years of using "semi-transparent stain", my cedar deck is a very dark color. I have always been told you cannot use a stain without a tint. I was excited to find a product in a "clear" color so that I could minimize the further darkening of my deck. This product isn't actually "clear", it is about the color of a pot of weak coffee, but the effect is relatively clear. The coverage was impressive. I used 5 gallons on a project that normally takes 6-7 gallons. The only downside is that is takes days and days to fully dry.
