Answer:
Yes, Sherents, it can. I installed mine in a steel door. You will need the proper size Forstner bit. If your bit is a bit too small then you can use a round file to make it fit. Most steel doors are hollow in the center with insulation covered by sheet metal.

Answer:
Zorina, the largest diameter viewer I have found is 2 3/8" made by Ultra Vision. You can use a viewer with a smaller diameter by using cover plates to cover the large 2 3/4" hole that you now have. A cover plate can be made of wood or metal.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great peephole I bought this for security at my office. It goes in a solid door. I have usually found peepholes to be so small that it's hard to really see who and what might be outside. This one is big and bright and has great visibility. Also, installation following the enclosed instructions is very easy. Probably 5-10 minutes, total. February 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Big Eye Door Viewer I purchased this viewer to replace a half inch viewer. With this viewer I can see who is at the door from a foot away from the viewer. The optics are glass and not plastic that can discolor in time. A disadvantage of this unit is a person can hide below the view that can be seen and the view to the sides are lacking. I would have preferred to see a wider view. Installation was not difficult as it mounts in a one inch hole. ( actually a 1516th hole. December 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great purchased! I would purchase again. I purchased this door eye reviewer for mom and myself. It allows me to see across the street. It gives a clear view of the person or persons as they are approaching the door. I would recommend the product. December 9, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Eye Door Viewer I am going through a remodel and changed the door knob on my front door to brushed nickel. My "peek hole" was gold so I decided to get a new one to match. I was unsuccessful getting the correct size until I checked homedepot.com and found exactly what I had been shopping for for 2 weeks at various hardware stores and specialty doors. I will always go to homedepot.com when I need anything. September 30, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Far Better than the small peepholes For price and quality, this is good value. The large size gives much brighter and clearer picture than 1/2 inch" models. The peep is made from metal and glass, don't buy the plastic peepholes. I made a door peep hole cover as its big enough to peer through from outside. A little paranoia but there are devices to look through these peepholes. A future project will modify it hiding sony "bullet" cam in the big one inch hole. The unit is fine as-is June 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product & it was super easy to order at Home Depot online. Very easy to install. Was happy with the look and quality of the product. December 12, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Elegant Looking This viewfinder was very easy to install and looks great! I am so pleased with it. January 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent optics This viewer gives you an excellent sight of what's outside your door. It has a larger diameter lens than the common viewers, which makes it very confortable to look through it with the advantage that it does not gives you any detail view if any at all looking in from the outside.
