Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. In reply to your question, kindly consider the following: When using a standard flag size of 3 ft. x 5 ft., calculating the drag force with a 6 ft. flag pole, the maximum amount of force that is considered safe is approximately 6 lbs. of drag force at a distance of 54” from the base of the holder. That translates to a wind speed of about 37 mph. This is above the average wind speed across the continental United States and should be adequate under normal usage conditions.
The key words one must consider here are “under normal usage conditions,” as it is not recommended to use this product in any other way than as a small residential flag pole holder. On that note, given that there is no simple way to answer this question, we hope this helps clarify why a simple maximum load solution cannot be provided. It should be noted that the same wind speed will create different loads dependent on the factors listed above. Therefore it must be stated that with average winds and a reasonably sized flag installed this holder, it should perform adequately. It is up to the end user to ensure that they remove their flag when wind speeds exceed winds of about 22 mph, this will ensure that this holder will not fail given sporadic gusts seen during storms or unseasonably windy days.
