Customer Questions & Answers

How far does the bolt extend beyond the bracket?

I have installed a pair of french pocket doors, the bottom of which are about 1/2" above the floor. When the doors are closed, I want them to stay securely in place; aligned both with the door jam and with one another. I want to attach a surface bolt (pointing downward) to the very bottom corner of each door, so that each bolt can be lowered into a hole that has been drilled in the floor. Only a bolt that extends at least a half inch beyond its bracket will work.
Asked by: Curt
These should work - the bolt will slide quite far! I suspect that for your application, one of the mounting screws will be visible if you extend the bolt that far. Not a big deal as everything is finished in the same bronze color, but something to keep in mind so there are no surprises.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not expensive, but not very good, either I like that it comes with two different pieces that allow for shallow or deep mounting (depending on the depth of the molding beside the door). I like the color, and that there was a selection of four different colors. But I did not like how shallow the mounting screws were. I can understand that you would not be able to have a thicker screw because it's such a slim latch, but the screws don't go in deep at all. I wonder how secure the door is if it's forced. The worst part is how hard you have to push the latch to open it. It does not travel along its own rail well and you really have to push it, which can temporarily hurt your finger.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good purchase No surprises here, you get what you expect. Attractive enough, but not highly decorative -- you get what you pay for. The bolt seems to be of solid quality and the finish is as described. You have the option of mounting the bolt receiver as a surface mount (sticking out) or in a recessed hole (drilled into your jamb). I've used this product both ways and it works well. Be sure to pre-drill pilot holes for the mounting screws as per the instructions because the screws themselves are fairly soft metal with a decorative finish that will scratch or strip out if you try to install without making pilot hole first. They really, really will. Trust me on this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from manufacturer's design is defective I bought several Everbilt surface bolts for my house. Both the 2.5" and th 4" bolts had at least 1" slide clearance to engage the lock, enough for any door. I found I needed one more and picked up a Defender Security surface bolt identical to the Everbilt bolts I had except for one thing. They are designed with a clearance of less than 1/2"!! You cannot engage any door lock with so small a slide, and if you do you have to set the mounting screw so close to the edge of the door one good push would rip it, and that piece of the door right off. I do not know if this product is the same in the stores but the picture indicates less than a 1/2" slide, no where near the required 1" slide distance of the Everbilt's surface bolts. PUT THE EVERBILTS BACK IN YOUR STORES!
