Questions & Answers

How long will this product operate smoothly?

The drawers rollers in my kitchen and bathrooms are over 30 years old and do not glide smoothly. Is it time to replace them? What are my options?
Asked by: Lily
read my comment about how to best install and reset. If installed that way than can last for decades. But if not, they can cause havock in a few years or less, depending on how heavy drawer is.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from how to better install and reset these types They can and do sag, letting the drawer edge scrape on the screw head. Which will over time actually destroy the drawer edge. I have one so bad it looks wavy, I have to rebuild. Many that needed some sanding of groove made by screw. Dont use the included type of screw. Use a taper head (with flat top), I use drywall screw. Important to use something a little longer too, unless is tiny drawer. I think I use 1" drywall, tightened by hand about as tight as I can. You don't want it to loosen at all ever. It will lose it's taper pull as described below. The forces are actually big....but the trick is this...be very exact and careful about screw placement, I use a 3 or 4d nail to make a pilot hole (tap pliers gripping nail back out). put the screw hole at the FRONT edge of the slot so that the TAPER on the head pulls the bracket super tight against the wood facing. Thats why they sag, they have an inherent geometry weakness. But if you set the screw like that, no problem. If you get it just a bit too forward, you can usually tap the back of the bracket down and it will set in place (that one will be even more firm : ). I thought about shimming behind back vertical part too, but when I started looking at in more, I thought this was better, kinda the same thing really, but no shims to glue in or fall out. These are all reset I'm doing. But this would apply to new install too. Not that I wouldn't at least try to find something better. But these are ok if you fasten them freakishly carefully and tight with longer, tapered head screw.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Adequate Replacement While not an exact replacement for an old broken roller, it worked well enough. The wheel could be mounted higher to prevent the drawer from dragging on the cabinet. I glued a washer behind the roller bracket to brace it up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and Fast Installation Needed to replace some 20+ year old drawer guides in an under bed storage cabinet. Pop the old ones out with a screw driver and dropped the new ones in. Tapped the replacements with a hammer to seat the barbs and then screwed them tight to frame. Replaced guides on 6 drawers in 15 minutes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Drawer roller kit My kitchen cabinets are from the 70's. We gave them a make over and we were surprised by finding the hardware needed to repair some of the drawers. I searched at all hardware stores in my home town and the web sites. Thanks to Home Depot our cabinets were fixed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Update After actually using these particular ones, I needed to change my prior review, it was based on a much older design. This one is indeed made from metal that is too think, substandard. It will actually warp under the screw's pressure. Even more prone to sagging problem and more difficult to get that to stop. And putting the screw at front of hole doesn't always work as well either. I did have to resort to shimming between the backing peice and the back of the cab. put a little glue on cardboard and jammed it under there. The roller is also about 1/16 less wide that the older ones, which means they will be less likely to be in full contact with the full thickness of the drawer edge-rail.
