I got it shipped to store (no shipping cost), which took about a week to get. I was in no hurry, so this worked out for me. You cannot key the lock to a specific set of pins -- except those in the kit. The kit supplies enough pins for 6 5-pin cylinders and three keys which match the set of pins they give you. I suppose if you had enough pins, you could match them up to a key you have, but then I would Read More

It can only rekey locks to a limited numbed of codes due to the selection of pins supplied, and not necessarily to the same code as a previously purchased lock.

Answer:
It may depend on the depth of the key cuts. The pins in the kit I used didn't have a great variance in length. When you have the pin cylinder out and your key inserted, try putting in the pins so they are flush with the surface of the cylinder and they should work OK.

Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. This Re-key A Lock Kit ships complete with enough pins to re-key up to 6 locks specific to the key code printed on each instructional insert. For a specific re-key other than the pre-set pin combination included with these kits, please inquire with an associate at the Pro desk of your local Home Depot .

We watched the video before we bought the kit. Then watched each step of the video as we went through the process. Once you figure out which angles to use the tools at and how hard to hit it, etc. the 2nd and 3rd ones would take less than 15-20 min each. The first one took us close to 30 minutes.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 35 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by EASY TO USE Used this product to re-key several locks, got the job done quickly, (I already had experience re-keying locks). Also used it to re-key a Weiser lock, (had a Schlage size plug but a Kwikset key way) so I had to improvise. My only negative is the tweezers are useless, (too flimsy). I removed the springs to clean the cylinder and the tweezers would not hold the upper pins tight enough to replace them, but this is not something normally done when just re-keying. August 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works every time. This isn't the first of these I've used. I've used the Schlage version as well. I hope they never quit making this product!! In this case, I had three doors with a lockset and a deadbolt each. Six locks that used six different keys. No more - one key opens all six locks and my keyring weighs a third of what it did before. The only tools you'll need are a screwdriver to remove the lock from the door and, depending on the lock, a small screwdriver to remove a clip ring. The instructions are clear and easy. You don't need to be a mechanical genius to rekey your lock. July 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Quality Control As another reviewer commented, this particular kit had a "remover" tool which was too big for the lockset. I had used this kit (ordered one last year) and used it no problem. This time I could not get the tool in at all! I couldn't find my kit from last year until today, and I proved to myself that the tool in this year's kit is bigger (see photos). It is hard to tell, but that 1 mm or less makes all the difference. The kit that has the tool with the half circle shape at the large end is bigger. The "V" shaped end is smaller (last year's kit) and works. It is easy to see the difference when you put them end-to-end. If you get the wrong (defective) kit, it won't work. Hope this helps! September 2, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked well for us We had a door that we needed to replace the lock on. We wanted it to have the same key as the old lock. After watching the video (and some attempts to do it without the tool) we decided to buy the kit. We were able to disassemble the old lock, replaced the pins in the new lock with the pins that would allow us to use the old key and reassembled. New lock works with the old key just like we wanted. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best decision Bought this because my daughter had her purse stolen, which had her house keys and id in it. With online videos and the instructions, it was very simple to re-key all the locks in the house. I'm not very handy but this product makes it easy to do. Much cheaper than a locksmith or buying all new locks. January 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy, step-by-step instructions You can re-key up to 6 locks with this kit. Three new keys are provided. The instructions are easy to follow and no locksmith skills are necessary. I would recommend watching online re-keying videos before starting. It took me about 30 minutes to do 6 locks after reading the instructions and watching a few videos. August 25, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by DID WHAT i NEEDED The product did what I needed for the most point. However at Home Depot the person that was helping me, and that actually placed the order. Did not understand or II was not clear enough, I needed two kits keyed alike. I was rekeying 8 locks. So I had to modify some of the old pins to make this work. Not a big deal. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVERTED HAD THE DECISION TO TAKE THE PRODUCT OUT OF THE STORE. There ate thousands and thousands of old Kwikset locks out there. June 30, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great buy !!! the pins were tricky at first but after the first one the rest were a breeze August 11, 2015
