Customer Questions & Answers

Are these reverseable?

Asked by: T56
The description says this locker is reversible, so I'm disinclined to believe the other answer.

I have a antique stand up wardrobe that is locked and needs a skeleton key...Cant find the correct fitting one. if so, could you include an item #? I have purchased 2 different keys that don't fit. thank you
Asked by: Kelso1
Prime-Line Products does have a small variety of skeleton keys available... please meet with a Pro Desk Associate at your local Home Depot and have them contact Prime-Line Products at (800) 649-9740. An example part to look up would be item no. E-2293*B as pictured below.

The screw holding the lock together is not recessed into the back of the lock, so you can't get the lock flat to the door - I guess they expect you to gouge out a hole for that screw. And the metal of the frame is too thin - with the lock screwed snug to the door, the body of the lock binds the latch tongue so it can't move. The ONLY redeeming feature is that the spring could be scavenged to use in the old lock, replacing the spring that has lost tension over the century or more of use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Old fashioned door knobs Pretty good knobs for the money. These were the only knobs I could use as I made my doors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job! We bought a house built in 1905. All of the doors have mortise locks and one was severely damaged. I purchase this unit and it fit almost perfectly. I did have to use a jig saw to move the whole through which the shaft for the doorknob passes, but only about 1/8 inch. I was able to re-use most of the old hardware. If you've never dealt with mortise locks before then you have to be patient and try a variety of options. This unit worked best for my needs and was very reasonably priced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Period Reproduction This product very closely matches old locksets in period homes. I installed four of this product in my 1875 home and they all have functioned perfectly and look great. The locks work fine with the skeleton keys and installation was very easy on my colonial doors. I would highly recommend.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very poor quality These locks were bought to have an antique look. They were very poor in quality, did not latch at all and had to be replaced after wasting much time on trying to make them work at all.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Better than nothing This lock was exactly what I needed but a 5 minute install turned into hours, If you are working at a remote location take tools with you. Depending on what side of the lock you need to lay against the door (for left or right), if you need to lay the side against the door that has the screw in the middle that holds the front and back together you will have problems. They didn't recess the screw enough and your lock will rock back and forth. If you compress this by balancing it at the door and tightening the corners thinking this will work, it will not. Do not tighten up that middle screw beyond what it takes just to hold it together. Any tightening of the screw, any pressure pushing that area in and the lock refuses to work properly from pressure pushing on the inside parts. The only way, and we tried about 15, was to use a large drill bit to give that screw a depression in the door to lay in. Thus ruining a good door. Gladly mine was not a mint door to start with, just an old cabin door that needed to stay closed. I bought 3 and one of them the front plate was slightly warped. Just remember that any overtightening on this lock on corner screws in mounting or anywhere and it will no longer work properly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works but not high quality I call it average since things today are not made like they used to be. The original was over seventy years old and finally wore out. I don't think this one is going to make it a year on my heavily used back door judging by the make of the parts compared to the old one. But, it was easy to install and does work fine for now. I installed it about two months ago and haven't had any problems with it. Will probably look for a higher quality replacement in the future. You get what you pay for as the price was fair for the quality.
