Will this rekey kit work on a Schage deadbolt as well as a door knob?

Asked by: oldfarmboy
Yes, I used same kit for four deadbolts and three doorknobs. Had to buy three kits.

4 Locks, Need Only 2 Keys

I have 2 doors that each have a regular lock and a deadbolt, so I need 4 locks rekeyed, but only want 2 keys. The deadbolts will be one key and the other locks one key. Can I do that with this product. Are the keys it comes with all different or all the same?
Asked by: Halfpint
No. All same. Buy two kits. Rekey two deadbolts with one kit and two doorknobs with second set. Keep the extra keys for when you might loose a set. Use unused keys to make any additional new keys made. Or Buy two kits, throw out one of the set of provided keys, replace all four pin sets so only one key is used for all locks. You will have three keys that work. Have any more new keys made from your extra new key.

This is a great way to key all your locks the same. Also great if you have a need to change locks but don't want to replace your expensive door hardware. This kit only works with Schlage locks. Other manufacturers have similar kits. Everything you need. Follow instructions CAREFULLY. If you pull the lock apart wrong, you won't get it back together.

This kit is just what the doctor ordered.I wanted to re-key my condo's deadbolts after buying it to preclude any extra keys floating around from the previous owner and this kit made that task relatively easy and it works well.

Be sure to read the directions especially concerning the pins. There are two rows of pins. One row you change; one row stays in place. Take care, and read the instructions, so that you kept the unchanged pins in place. Have extra keys made from your now original keys. Making new keys from old/worn keys never works well for me. I'm pleased I now have smoothly working new locks and spare keys.

I changed 3 cylinders in about 10 minutes. It came with plenty of spare pins in case you have butterfingers. This was way cheaper and faster than going to a locksmith. The paper instructions are OK, but in this and all things, watch a youtube video if this is your first time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great It turns out rekeying your locks isn't hard. Look up the Schlage rekey video on YouTube. It was made by the manufacturer of this kit. I followed the video exactly and had no trouble. I rewatched it and followed along for every lock because I didn't want to screw up and lose the springs. The only other advice I would add is: Don't over-tighten the cylinder endcap on the deadbolt. (That's the screw-on piece that you have to hold the pin down for.) Turn it until it is tight, then back up one click of the pin. Otherwise it could be very difficult to turn the key! I found this out the hard way and had to partially disassemble a deadbolt after I was done. I am not sure if all of the kits have the same sizes and colors of pins. If they do, then this is much less secure (from an entropy perspective) than using a professional kit or having a locksmith do it. That would mean there are only 120 possible key combinations for these kits. Whereas Schlage locks should have 100,000 possible key combinations. But in practice it probably just doesn't matter.

This set was supposed to change the locks on 6 locksets, however there were only 29 pins in the set. I called Schlage CS, and they told me that Schlage does not color code their pins, so the set must be made by another company, and they couldn't help me by replacing the missing pin. I called HD, and the hardware guy there said he'd give me one of each length of pin, to replace the missing one. I think HD should carry the genuine Schlage kits, to avoid the hassle. The tweezers in the kit are also almost impossible to use, as they are made of cheap plastic.
