I am looking to extract water from the water barrel by connecting the pump to the barrel using PVC pipe, then use the garden hose with a rain sprinkler end.

Answer:
Short answer is YES. To get around the problem of dead-heading, I used a splitter so that some of the water is always recirculated back to the rain barrel. This thing puts out plenty of water, so the recirculation flow does not really affect the pressure.

Answer:
The pump should work well for your application. The outlet pressure at around 50 psi can be higher than your normal house water pressure.

It isn't exactly SELF priming, but it's super easy to prime. I tossed the priming 3/4" plug that is supplied and added instead a 3/4" nipple and to that added a water shut off valve. I just pour a little water in the open valve and when it's full close the valve. That way I don't need a wrench to tighten the prime plug each time. I wish it had an on/off switch in the cord. The pump needs to be primed. On the top of the pump is a small plug that needs to be removed. Add a bit of water and then close the plug. The pump comes with a cord and plug.

Hi Coach 1949,
Our web site product description is incorrect. This pump is not self-priming. It does have an 8 foot cord and operates on 120volts ac.

Answer:
No. It will continue to run as long as it is plugged in. Do NOT let it continue to run without water in the pump as it is likely to burn out the pump.

No. I bought one first of the year to transfer water into my concession trailer. Some of my shows do not have water, so have to take my own. It don't take long to fill up a 30 gal. tote. It does the job but is all manual. It don't shut off on it's own at all. Good little pump!

Answer:
Inlet and outlet diameters are 3/4", and the threaded male adapters are designed for a garden hose.
You need a thick wall hose on the inlet otherwise the hose can collapse. Best to buy a short rubber 3/4" garden hose for the inlet side.

Pro Transfer 1/2 HP Utility Pump is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 62.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect rainwater niche pump My first impression of the pump is that I am very happy with it! I wanted to pump stored rainwater, and this does the job outstandingly. I can run two sprinklers with 125 ft. of hose with no problem. Even choked down a bit. It is quiet (reasonably) , and at 1/2 hp, it is not too bad with electrical power consumption. The priming plug needs thread tape and some tightening to keep it from dribbling. I would strongly recommend this for these applications.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recommended Better than expected. Has it's own storage box with handle like a mini tool box. Worked better than anticipated for the money. Drained a 29,000 gallon pool in 2.5 days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rain Barrel application We bought this pump when my 1/10 hp pump no longer supplied the pressure that we needed for my wife's container garden. The 1/2 hp gets the job done. I put a recirculation line on the pump discharge back to the rain barrel to make sure that it did not dead-head. I used PVC pipe for the suction line to prevent suction line collapse. The whole setup runs on an outdoor timer that I bought at Home Depot for around $15. (If you run on a timer, you may need a solenoid valve on the discharge to keep it from siphoning all the water from the barrel.) Also, make sure you don't run it dry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good valve pump Pros: the pump does what it says it would do. I use it to empty IBCs of recycled water from the treatment plant onto my yard, and it will empty the 275 gallons through 100 feet of 3/4" discharge hose and a sprinkler head In 35 to 40 minutes with -3' elevation.. Sorry, I have no idea of the discharge pressure at these conditions, but 9 gal/min is an impressive sprinkler flow. . I use 2' of 3/4" of cheap garden hose for suction, but recommend you hard pipe your application, as this pump will collapse that hose at times. I have also used about 3' of 3/4" suction hose to empty 55 gal trash, up 3 or 4 feet through 50' of 3/4", which it does in less than a minute. I have also deadheaded it, and run it dry (NOT recommended), with no apparent damage. It functions faster if you prime it per instructions, but it will develop at least 2 to 3' of npsh Under the right circumstances. Cons: it's almost as loud as a hedge trimmer, and at the claimed 60 PSI discharge flow rate is pretty low (at 3-4' NPSH). My wife doesn't like how heavy it is; I don't find this a problem. However, it's cast, so don't drop it. Also, it is NOT submersible, so you have to keep it dry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome worked as advertised.... installed a ball valve for priming port for easy application. simple, fast and easy. what more could you want from moving water? Obtained a clear braided pvc hose as the intake hose to be able to see water moving and any potential debris issues. great piece of equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent time saver This pump drains a 50 gallon water heater in under 8 minutes. I have used other pumps and this one by far is the best I have used.
Date published: 2011-05-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy with purchase. I use this pump to transfer recycled water from drums to my lawn and plants. Has a good pressure comparable to water coming from the house. It isn't light weight since it has a cast iron casing with a useful carry handle. I do recommend that you use a stronger input hose than a standard garden hose. The suction is so strong it collapses a standard house. Comes with a storage case and garden hose fittings. No on /off switch. Turns on when you plug it in. I use it for about an hour each day and have had zero issues. Its been about 2mo since I purchased it online.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The pump did exactly what I bought it for This pump performed as advertised. I have two 55 gallon buried gray water tanks that roof runoff drains into. I live in an arid area so water is precious. I now pump out the otherwise wasted water to water dry areas of the yard. This pump delivered water uphill through a two hundred foot hose to a PVC plenum I made to distribute the water without pooling. Priming is a snap. Hose pressure more than I expected.
