also, does it need to be caulked to the wall when installed to keep out water or does it come with a rubber seal?

does this unit have a dust to dawn sensor as well?

from one of the reviews that says "This new light with it's electric eye to detect when it light and motion sensor to detect when something is moving around" this makes me think it has a dusk to dawn sensor as well as the motion detector.
Asked by: tinkgirl
No. Just a motion sensor. You do have the option to have the light on continuously, by turning on/off the light switch.

I have tried replacing the light , It will not light .

what type of light do I use when the old light is burned out ?
Asked by: Pergerson
The sensor is a small computer motherboard circuit. I just disconnected the wires from the motherboard and then rewired the light to the power wires. It works like an old fashioned light now where you have to switch it on and off. It was very easy to do! I always loved the look of this lantern. I plan to purchase those dawn to dusk light bulbs to use now.

Over the course of six months I have returned every single one of them, sometimes twice, one of them 3 times. The motion sensor stops working, sometimes after a few weeks, other times a couple on months. I've tried sealing with foam tape and caulking and still they end up failing. I know it's not the switch or outlet because other brands have worked fine for years. I've have been distinctly Unimpressed with quality which is unfortunate because they are actually quite attractive... when they choose to work.

Most people will tell you that this unit fails in 1 - 2 years. It happened to me! The fixture is beautiful, but because the light is hooked up to a motion sensing motherboard, when the motherboard fails, the light won't work UNLESS you have a little electrician in you! I turned off the power, took the light down, snipped a few of the wires that fed through the motherboard, and reconnected the wires to the power supply. The light works again - but not as a motion sensing light. Progress Lighting will not tell you that you can easily rewire the lantern yourself to have it working again after it has failed. I look forward to now just using a dawn to dusk light bulb in the fixture.

Though it did not say on the box whether or not it was dusk to dawn, other dusk to dawn wall lanterns did not either. I would have taken the Progress light, however, but when setting the timer to five minutes, the light did not shut off after five minutes with nothing to detect during the five minute period it was on. It may have been this particular fixture that had this problem, but I did return it. Installation was easy.

I purchased two about 3 years ago and one stopped working about a year ago (I guess 2 years is this product's true life cycle). Anyway, I was going to purchase a matching replacement until I read these reviews. Wish I had done this before my initial purchase.

The only draw back is that the bottom is open, probably due to heat, however, bugs like to nest there. Possibly a screen would be a useful addition. Over all a good, solid product.
