Are the berries edible

Asked by: Jan
Hi Jan, The Black Lace Sambucus has red fall berries which can be harvested and made into elderberry wine and jam. However, the berries should not be eaten uncooked straight from the plant as that can cause a toxic reaction in both humans and pets. The berries should always be cooked before consuming them. This will make them safe to eat and allow for you to make that delicious wine and/or jam! This plant will attract birds, however, as birds love the berries and they are not toxic to them. If you have any additional questions, feel free to call us at (734) 654-7485. Thanks, Hailee
