Questions & Answers

what is the growing zone for Yuma, AZ?

Asked by: articfox
Hi articfox, The USDA Plant Hardiness zone for Yuma, AZ is 10a. Unfortunately, the Double Play Blue Kazoo only thrives in zones 3-8. Consider these shrubs for your zone- Proven Winners Sunshine Blue (Bluebeard) and Infinitini Brite Pink (Crapemyrtle). They are both drought tolerant and will bring lots of color to your yard! If you have any questions please call our hotline (734) 654- 7485. Best regards, Fallon

Can I prune this nice and tight after bloom...for a bloom next year....to keep it tight and small

Asked by: Karen
Hi Karen, The Double Play Blue Kazoo is a really low maintenance plant and should be easily kept tight and small. It only grows to a mature height of 2-3 feet and you may prune it after it flowers in the Spring. Be careful not to prune the new growth in Spring though, as you will eliminate the flowers. If you have any questions please call our hotline at (734) 654- 7485. Best regards, Fallon

I realize it's not easy to ship a plant but my $60 3 gal one arrived with about 10 or so broken stems. Hopefully it will come out of it & do fine, like my others. Shipping was exceptional. Ordered one day it arrived the next day!!

The first ones arrived poorly packaged and in poor condition. I had to return several, but my local Home Depot store made that very easy. The replacements that I ordered came properly packed in individual boxes. I know from other Spiraea that I've planted that they are deer resistant, so that was a determining factor in my choice. I also appreciate the fact that they are well behaved shrubs, needing little dividing or pruning.

It did arrive with probably 10-14 broken stems which bothered me for the $60 price. It coming around though & hopefully it survives the shipping setback. I know it's hard to ship a plant & it was packaged very well. This is my 5th one. Grows fast!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfection! I am a huge fan of spirea. It's a relatively easy shrub to maintain, the cultivars are generally really cool colors and maintain their shape on their own. So when I saw this variety I was so excited! It has already bloomed for me. The foliage is a nice bluish green, with clusters of small white blooms. It's good for sunny areas, and has a small max size. It was mailed to me and came in wonderful shape. I would definitely purchase this again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Summer flowers, deer resistant, colorful leaves, attracts hummingbirds This Proven Winners ColorChoice perennial shrub came in a quart container. The price is WAY more than I would typically spend on this sized plant, but it is unique and I am very pleased with it. The leaves are quite small and many different colors, mostly green with some blue and burgundy tinges in the new growth. In the fall, the leaves should be a rich red before they fall off for the winter. According to the plant card, this will produce white flowers during the summer, attracts hummingbirds (but not deer). The plant was shipped directly from the grower in a cardboard box with air holes and was securely positioned in the box with cut-out cardboard. No issues with soil in the box. Included in the package was a note from Proven Winners stating the plant is dormant from November through April and it won't have any blooms and may even look dead but not to worry, it is healthy and will thrive soon enough. It comes with a 90-day return policy in case it doesn't perk up as it should. I received my plant at the end of February and it most certainly looked near-dead. Just twigs with a couple of leaves. Since we weren't expecting any freezing weather in northeast Florida, I was able to put the pot in my flower bed without worrying about covering. Now two weeks later in mid-March, the plant is full of leaves and looks healthy! The plant card indicates this shrub will get 2-3 feet tall and wide. This makes it an ideal size for landscaping projects but be sure to give enough space - the temptation is take this tiny little quart size pot and plant it close to other things, but it will need a good amount of space as it grows over the years. Relatively low maintenance… I plan to apply a slow release fertilizer when I plant it this spring (try Proven Winners 2.5 lb. Time Release Fertilizer - it's great!), and then reapply in the fall. Adapts to most soil types. Pruning is optional and can be done immediately after it flowers. Ideal only for zones 4-8 for sun or half-day sun locations. I will likely just let this grow naturally a few years unless there is a wild branch sticking out. Looking forward to seeing whether it grows quickly to full size.
