Customer Questions & Answers

Is this a scented lilac? That's what i 'm looking for.

I really wanted strong scented lilac bush or trees.
Asked by: PARKER
This shrub is not a Lilac bush (Syringa), this is a dwarf Butterfly bush (Buddleia) with the name of 'Lilac Chip' because of the color. Some may call it a 'Summer Lilac' , so it may be sold in some states that prohibit invasive plants as some butterfly bushes can be. This dwarf hybrid butterfly bush is not invasive, can be grown in large containers, and does not have to be dead-headed to keep blooming right through Fall. They do have a light fragrance, but not as heavy as lilacs. I have three pink 'Lo and Behold' butterfly bushes in resin type whiskey barrels. They are about five years old now, approx. 18 to 20 inches tall/wide and are going through another flush of blooms without dead-heading (although you can if you want to tidy them some, but these plants don't set seed). Mine do not really get full sun so they don't bloom as heavily as they would in full sun, 6 or more hours is best. I do cut them back some in late winter as I am in NC, so they don't die back as in colder climates. see photo

Can you grow this in a large pot

Asked by: dawn
Yes, I don't think I'd use anything smaller than 16 inch pot per plant. My pink 'Lo and Behold' are in a resin half whiskey barrel that is approx. 19 inches in diameter and 12 inches deep. Butterfly bushes tend to have more shallow roots, so the pot may not need to be quite that deep.

does the butterfly ush like sun or shade

does the butterfly ush like sun or shade
Asked by: Amy
Butterfly bush likes full sun the best, which is 6 or more hours of direct sun. Mine get about 5 or so hours of morning sun, so they don't bloom quite as heavily as they would in more.

can I purchase a lilac bush in a store?

Asked by: grannyjean36
I'm sure you can, but this is not a Lilac bush (Syringa). This shrub is a dwarf Butterfly Bush (Buddleia) with a name of 'Lilac Chip' because of the color. They may look somewhat similar but are two different plants. HD tends to carry the Butterfly bush in my store. You should call your local store to see if they carry the one you are looking for.
