Customer Questions & Answers

why does my plants not bloom anymore after the first yr I planted them. They have been planted about 7 yrs.

Asked by: MiMi
Are you following these guidelines? It is best to prune immediately after flowering. Will flower sporadically on current season's growth. Medium moisture. Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs. Trimming weigela bushes right after they bloom will keep you from inadvertently pruning off next year’s flowers. This is because weigela bloom on wood that it is a year old. The wood that grows this year will bloom next year. Pruning weigelas after blooming means that you will pruning before the blooming wood has a chance to grow.

Customer Reviews

Wine & Roses Reblooming Weigela (Florida) Live Shrub, Pink Flowers and Dark Purple Foliage, 4.5 in. Qt. is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from High Hopes About the variety, what's not to like [except that's it's not evergreen]. Copious trumpet-like rosy-pink flowers emerging in the Spring which re-bloom through Summer, dark purple-toned glossy foliage. Deer-resistant; attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Needs partial-to-full sun, minimal water requirements once established; moderate grower; manageable size [5H x 5W] which can be pruned. Zones 4-8 [I'm in Zone 7]. A plant patent expires 20 years after its Filing Date, so I guess we're free to propagate after 4 Sep 2017. Now for the plant itself. It arrived in reasonable good condition; some burning but transplant-able after two days of acclimation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First one died but I was sent a second, healthy one I received one of these for a dead spot between some compact lilac shrubs. The shrub arrived in late July (heat wave week). It was pretty stressed but I left it on the patio in morning sun and gave it water. Before being boxed it looked like it was pruned but not that well. It appeared someone took head trimmers and sliced off the top, cutting leaves and all (see picture). This appeared to add to the plant's stress. I waited until an overcast day and planted it (late July). I soaked the hole and the plant afterwards. It budded out new leaves and went through some transplant shock and eventually died. I contacted Proven Winners on a Friday in September and by the next Wednesday I had a replacement plant in excellent shape. I replanted and it is doing great. Great customer service. I assume it will take a few years to get big but am excited to see how it will look next spring. I have it in a full sun (12+ hours) location.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very popular plant but still no blooms on mine. As far as I can tell from my research, the Wine and Roses Weigela is the same whether it is call "re-blooming" or not, and whether it is called a "shrub" or not. If it's "Wine and Roses," then that means that it's a re-blooming shrub. It gets great reviews as a plant that doesn't look good in winter but makes up for that in summer. The plant came with some dead leaves as shown in the photo. It had no blooms or buds. I pruned those off and new growth started within the week, but still no buds. At this point, the foliage does not seem noticeably dark purple. The new growth is light green and the older growth is dark green.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cute little plant In its 4.5 in. Quart's size, this weigela is a rather small plant. However, it has the potential to become much larger, up to 10 feet by 10 feet, which is impressive. The delivered plant was quite healthy. No flowers yet, not sure if the season is over yet. The plant seems to be pretty happy in its new habitat. As usual with Proven Winners' products, this plant was well packed and in good condition. I do recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Expensive I paid $15 a piece for these online thru HD although they were obviously sent directly from Proven Winners. I guess I am paying for what they are going to look like and not how they looked when they arrived as I doubt I'd have paid $15 for what I received. Having said that they are doing well and I am hoping for the best.
