Customer Reviews

4-Channel 3MP 1TB Wi-Fi Surveillance NVR with 4 Indoor/Outdoor Dome Security Cameras and Wi-Fi Extender is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great cameras but the finicky NVR came with no directions and WiFi signal is not great I installed this system at my house and am not very pleased. My opinion is to go with hard-wired if you plan on putting cameras outside. The cameras are the strength of this system though and really great. The resolution and night vision is amazing but I had several significant issues with the hard drive/play back device (NVR), WiFi connectivity, the phone app and website and customer support. The NVR and WiFi extender should have come with directions. I can tell QSee produces many different systems and I feel this system was put together in a box with little thought for the person setting it all together. If you are not going to have directions, at least provide good, responsive customer support. As this system has many parts, this review is long but if you are interested in purchasing it, I hope it helps. I give this product 2.5 stars (I rounded to 3 on the review) because it does not perform its intended function well, lacks directions and I received no help from customer support. Unless you connect the cameras with Ethernet cable (which the NVR doesn’t support), the NVR needs to be close to the cameras in order for an even decent WiFi connection. My cameras are 20-30 feet from the NVR with a cinder block/brick wall between them and the NVR and the feed is rarely fluid. The WiFi extender didn’t help and made matter worse. Customer support never contacted me back and based off some other QSee reviews I have read, it doesn’t seem to be very good at all. Of serious note, because the cameras are WiFi, their signal can be disrupted, especially the 2.4 GHz. Installation: The system came packaged very well and with a great quick start guide. I set everything up before installing to make sure it worked. That was also a good time to connect the NVR to my phone app and try to do the same on my computer. The quick start guide in the box (the only directions included) and set up wizard on the NVR was great. I installed three cameras under eaves and a fourth in the outside basement stairwell, by the door. The template for where to drill holes was extremely helpful. I found a 1" hole worked to get the wires from the camera through the eaves or foundation wall. My eaves are covered with vinyl so I ran the camera wire around the vinyl sheet and into the eave (see picture). I did this in case I or a future owner removes the cameras, there isn't a 1" hole in the vinyl. For the basement door camera, I secured it to the slab above the door with 3/16" Tapcon screws (anchors). The screw heads were too wide to fit in the camera housing so I thinned them on my bench grinder. For every screw, I used a hand screw driver. When securing the cameras with screws, the dome has to be removed and a power driver can easily slip off the screw and damage the delicate inner workings of the camera. Of note, I used the Ethernet fittings provided and capped the Ethernet part of the camera wire, put tape on top and just stuck it in the hole. The 30ft power extension cords were great and I am glad they were included. My biggest worry of installing a security system was powering the cameras and these cords came in handy. I fished them through the eave with fishing tape. I plugged the three eave cameras into a power strip in the attic. You will need an outlet in the attic unless you run the wires through a window which I don't recommend. The camera domes come with a plastic sheet protective cover. Do not remove it until the camera is fully installed. Before putting the domes back on, I found hand adjusting each camera to be easy, I watched on my phone as I set each one in a perfect spot. The only issue is that they don't go to zero degrees in tilt so getting a low and high view for a distant area like a driveway is tough. Wi-Fi and the Extender: On paper, the WiFi is great as you don’t have to fish Ethernet cables through walls and to the NVR. But none of my cameras are fully sync’d and I notice consistent delays in time during the realtime footage. Delays as big as 20 seconds to a few minutes or so. This leads to big gaps in footage and a super-fast playback on the NVR as it moves quickly through the gaps. Rarely do I get the 25 frames per second (fps) the cameras are set it. Most commonly it appears to be 1 fps. I particularly had trying to get the NVR to pick up my basement stairwell camera. So, I used the WiFi extender. It is a TP-Link device (third party) and there was no directions whatsoever on how to hook this up to the NVR. The extender is meant to extend the NVR’s WiFi range, not the range of your actual WiFi router. After trial and error and because the NVR WiFi is a secure network, I eventually found the password for the NVR WiFi in the NVR settings, under Network > WiFi. I was able now able extend the NVR WiFi and my basement stairwell camera appeared on the screen. Problem is, the other three cameras began to lag as I assume they were ‘confused’ as to whether they should connect to the NVR directly or the extender. The extender made matters worse. I moved it all around the house to isolate just the basement camera but had no real success. My best solution was to move the NVR to the basement and extender in another basement room, on the side of the house with the most cameras. With this setup it isn’t perfect but I get all four cameras with the least lag, enough to capture most of a potential intruder's motions and face. I also dropped the bit rate to 1280 because I read that this can help on the internet. I will continue to troubleshoot. One thing I would like to note, the NVR puts out a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi signal. At first I thought this was great as 5 GHz isn’t interrupted by baby monitors and other devices. After I turned the 2.4 GHz off at the NVR though, I realized my cameras only use 2.4 GHz but on the NVR it seems cameras wont use 5 GHz unless you have a 36th+ camera. In addition, the WiFi extender can only transmit in 2.4 GHz. What I attempted to do was put the basement stairs camera on 2.4 GHz and the rest on 5 GHz. No success. A nice option for the NVR would be the ability to assign a specific WiFi network to each camera. If I had this option, my connectivity would be a lot better. The NVR It's overwhelming and at first, frustrating. It does have a ton of options for the cameras; resolution, when to record, what areas of the view set off a motion alarm, etc. I have three major dislikes about the NVR. 1) It came with absolutely no instructions. I found instructions for a similar NVR on the QSee website and that helped me figure some of it out. I was very disappointed to not have an instruction booklet specifically for this NVR. 2) The software can be slow and it sometimes freezes on me, requiring a hard boot of the NVR. I only have four cameras, I can't imagine what 8 or more is like. 3) It's always running and has a cooling fan. With that, the fan makes a light but noticeable noise all day. The NVR has to be plugged into my router and needs a screen so it's in my living room under the TV. If you are bothered by such noises, you will have to move it somewhere else with a screen and good WiFi connectivity to the cameras. Some other issues I have with the NVR is fluid playback. The cameras are on the default setting of 30 frames per second but on playback I get maybe 1fps. I also get big gaps here and there. I think it may be the WiFi although the three eave cameras outside are about 20 ft away from the NVR. I also set the cameras to record everything but on the NVR I also get motion events... events that I set the NVR to email me about. I haven't received an email yet. One impact of poor connectivity is it makes it hard to adjust settings on the cameras. If one camera is not connected or connected well, the NVR cannot save settings to it until the camera connects. For storage, 2.5 weeks of motion events on three cameras takes up the hard drive then it rewrites. But when it rewrites, it appears to automatically erase the first two weeks of recording, not the oldest day, one day at a time. This all depends on how many motion alerts you have though. I was able to save a clip to an external USB device. At first the NVR recognized one thumb drive I had and also an external hard drive but when I hit ‘save’, it told me the device was not there. I tried a second drive and that worked. It saved the clip in several files. I am not sure why it was several files, it may be due to the skipping and gaps on my cameras from poor connectivity. Cameras The camera resolution is insanely good and they are very well built. I do have an HD antenna at my TV for local channels and if a camera gets within a few feet of it, the HD antenna will not work. I did unplug this antenna as part of my connectivity troubleshooting, with no success. The baby monitor for our baby is also on the same frequency as the cameras and will interfere with signal. Options the cameras do not have: remote movement, microphone or SD card. They do have a slot for an LCN card, whatever that is. The phone app: This was easy to set up but not every cameras shows up even though it does on the NVR, I find removing my NVR and re-adding it helps. As far as playback, I can get some of it in the “Pic” version but very little; it is finicky. Website: Through troubleshooting Google searches, I found out this only works on Internet Explorer, which can have Active X enabled. I could not get Active X to work on FireFox, Chrome or Edge. Once on the site and with my NVR connected, I can't see my cameras or do playback though, just a black screen. Customer support: They have set working hours every day of the week. I called and waited on hold for 20 minutes before leaving a message at a prompt. No one ever called me back.

Easy to install but trying to get and keep steady camera view/signal was terrible. I could only get 2 cameras to work steady even after increasing my wifi speed to the highest speed and purchasing extenders. In addition, the QSEE tech support was horrible and wanted to charge me an extra 150.00 for a software program.
