Is a hydro barrier (like RedGuard) required with seam tape and thinset on the seams?

For a tub surround being retiled with new backerboard installed, does it require a "hydro barrier" applied to the tape and the cement board screws? Thanks!
Asked by: dixie10splayer
Unless you put a plastic vapor barrier behind the backboard, you should redgard all the way above the outlet for the showerhead. Follow the directions on package and put 3-4 coats on the walls.

It is an excellent way to make a screen mesh patch to Spackle over. You have to first Spackle the edges down and allow to dry. It will then be a firm surface to make a final repair over a large hole. See photos..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Very simple to use. For long runs, when applying thin set and feathering, start from the middle and work out. This minimizes the wrinkles in the tape

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked as expected. Great self stick. If you followed previous reviewers tip to wipe clean the seams with wet cloth or sponge and let it dry then this product has absolutely no problem self sticking to hardie backerboard. It doesn't say that on the product packaging to make sure seams are wiped clean prior to applying it, but you need to and this will work great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it's suppose to I just used this on kitchen, dining, and bathroom floors; over hardibacker board. This was my third tile job in 5 years and I've never had any issues. It is self adhesive, i'm not sure why so many people say it didn't stick...maybe they didn't clean the subfloor before laying it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sticks fine.... For HArdiBacker , you need to wash the seams with water to get the dust off. Let dry and it will stick great. Not sure about Durock but I would assume the same.
