Customer Questions & Answers

Can you install this on an exterior wall instead of ceiling?

Our bathroom is on the first floor and we can not run duct work in the pre-existing wall up through the attic and vent out the roof. We need to put an out take/exhaust fan on the exterior bathroom wall.
Asked by: Anonymous
First of all, I have two of these units and they are phenomenal. Personally, I would recommend against any exterior wall installation. You will open up a Pandora's box of issues the unit wasn't designed for. You may want to consult with local building codes, as well as the manufacturer themselves. The unit would have to be placed so the damper extends out the side and then rotated 90 degrees to allow the damper to open and close properly. I believe this is a "squirrel cage" blower so you will also be dealing with a slight elliptical stress on the blower when in use. You would have to remove insulation from the side wall, which you would not be able to replace. Your clearance between the inside wall and exterior wall may not even be enough to contain the unit depending on construction of the house. If it was my house I would not install it horizontally myself, or allow anyone else to do it for me. Creativity can find some beautiful solutions to the problem using the same vent unit. In one application, I have the entire unit in an adjacent utility room. I had a galvanized cover made with an opening for a 4 inch vent, where the grill would normally be mounted. A duct runs from there to the bathroom. The normal exhaust from the vent runs out the sidewall. The wiring from the vent fan, simply runs to the switch box in the bathroom.

Will this work to replace QTN110B motor without changing the housing?

Happy Thanksgiving
Asked by: Warren
Thanks for your question, but the model QTN110 is not a valid model number. Check the unit again . . . is it possibly a QT110?? The ‘guts’, or the motor assembly, of the QTRN110 can not be installed in a QT110. I would suggest that you call our Customer Service Department at 888-336-3948. Be sure to double check the model number on your installed unit. Thanks, again.

I'm trying to replace another wall-mounted fan. Can this be wall-mounted?

I'm trying to replace another wall-mounted fan. Can this be wall-mounted?
Asked by: TxTom
Thank you for the installation question. Broan-NuTone exhaust fans are U.L listed. A wall mount installation is not recommended by U.L on the QTR-Series and, therefore, we would suggest a ceiling mount. Another concern is the depth of the fan housing. Most units are too deep for a wall. We can recommend a few units: 8832WH, 8832SA. If you have further questions, dial 888-336-3948 and our Customer Service Department can assist you. Thanks, again.

Customer Reviews

QTR Series Quiet 110 CFM Ceiling Exhaust Bath Fan is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I wanted I decided to write a review after researching comments for a friend when I recommended this fan. I was also disappointed when I installed it and it was noisy and not alot of air flow but ... it was not the fan - it was my error. The vent duct to the outside (no part of this fan) was plugged at the screen which exists out the house. That issue of being plugged, caused turbulance at the fan itself. I am astonished now at how quiet, and the air flow is out of this world. As another review commented, I too can feel it pull air under the door and out through the fan. No fog what-so-ever on the window or mirrors, now that I removed the blockage in the vent duct. No problem with the fan at all. Thank You Nutone.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for new construction. This fan gave me problems trying to install it as a replacement fan for an older NUTONE. It's designed for new construction, It could not be installed from bottom up, this meant making the hole larger than it needed to be so that I cloud slide it down from the attic to the ceiling.Than repairing the ceiling, don't know if it was worth it, especially since I notice it's $25 cheaper than I paid for it. The fan is very quiet and pulls all the moisture out, no more moisture on walls. This would of been a 5 star if it would be designed for retrofit and not new installation.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Waste of money After reading all of the reviews we decided to buy this fan. We figured that even if it was louder than it says it is, it had to be better than what we have now. Oh how wrong we were. We have the builder grade fan that is loud and hardly clears a powder room. After installing this fan (a little time consuming, but not difficult) it was a great disappointment to turn it on and hear how loud it was. Not only is it loud, but it barely holds a facial tissue to the vent. I had to push the tissue up to the vent and flatten it to the vent before it would hold. For the size of the fan, I would have expected it to suck the tissue right from my hand. This was a waste of money.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Skip it, Overall: I would not purchase this fan again and would not recommend it at this price. If you could find it on sale for $95 that would be a decent price. Get a Panasonic or Fantec instead. Installation: moderate to hard (you might have to change framing around) Air movement: very good (compared to stated flow) Noise: not good, the fan is 2-3x louder than they claim. Construction: poor Included parts: poor Documentation: fair The details: I was looking for a fan to replace the cheap NuTone builder installed model that's been in the house for 10+ years. I generally don't like NuTone products but I didn't want to wait for a $114 Panasocnic model to show up in the mail. ( I used Panasonic fans in my old house and loved them:: very quiet and powerful) This fan comes with nothing extra. No wire nuts, no gaskets, no templates, no screws. That's not really so bad, but the build quality of the unit itself is so low that you'd think they could put in those parts for this price point. The instructions don't even give you a rough-opening size, so you have to install this thing then cut the opening to the inside dimensions. The sheet metal of the main housing is thin and very resonant. The motor assembly is removable from the main housing, but doing so is very hard to do, there's a wing nut and three tabs, one of which you have to push up the motor assy to release, and you will push the main housing up off the ceiling when you do this. The motor itself is isolated from the motor mount by some small rubber o-rings. The motor assembly itself has no isolation from the main housing. I tested the fan for noise on the floor with it all disassembled and it sounded pretty quiet, but once installed it was not very much quieter than the fan I replaced, mostly the motor noise is transferred to the ceiling and walls which act as sounding boards. Do not believe the 1.5 sones rating, it;s closer to 2 or 2.5 The instructions are nearly worthless. Step 1: secure to framing Step 2: wire it up Step 3: put on the grill cover Seriously, that's about it. This fan mounts on one side only. You don't have any flexibility in mounting unless you build-up or re-locate framing in the ceiling. Again, at this price point I'm disappointed. I hate returning things and the fan is moving a decent amount of air, maybe 90-100cfm with about 14 feet of flex tubing and 120 degree turn (probably 110cfm without ducting). I'm hoping putting some weather stripping between the main housing and the ceiling as well as some washers and o-rings on the mounting screws will isolate enough motor hum to make the thing worth keeping, but my hopes are low.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GOOD WORK HORSE We tried a few in both of our buildings, we have over 20 bathrooms, product works good! Just bought 5 more replacing a different brand.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent fan This fan is a bit louder than I expected but not bad. It's not silent as advertised. One drawback to mounting the fan could be existing framing. Other fans I've seen come with rails that will span across your ceiling joists so you can position it where you like. This one has to be mounted directly to a joist, so you may need to add framing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Loud and getting louder! After using this model to replace an older Nutone 80cfm model (4.0 Sones) it was not noticeably quieter. Then, after it had been running for 5 minutes the motor started making noise (rather than airflow noise) -- I am hoping this new noise will disappear as magically as it re-appeared (but am not going to hold my breath!)

Rated 2 out of 5 by from qtrn110 fan If you are looking for a fan that sounds as loud as a jet, this may be the one for you. Much noisier than fan I am replacing. Ditto comments in other reviews about lightweight construction and unhelpful instructions. Pass on this fan and spend your money on a different model.
