box inside a box?

Why is there a plastic box inside the metal box? I cannot tell by the tiny picture with the door open. I'm looking for one big non-locking box that simply opens and closes like a normal mail box...only larger. I am supposed to order a box for the builder to install in a brick column.

Answer:
The interior is a plastic box which fits inside the metal. Interior dimensions are 16L x 8.5W x 12H inches. There are some photos on http://www.qualarc.com/products/manchester/manchester.html

Answer:
Yes, it uses a magnet closure, a thin magnet in the housing and a steel washer in the door. Each is secured only by an adhesive (epoxy, it seems). Works great initially, but over time I expect the epoxy will degrade and you'll need to resecure the parts.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quality item. Looks great. Nice quality. Just what I was looking for. Had it installed in a brick pillar. November 6, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome!!! Love my new mailbox and it got there in record time. Also I bought the security lock that can go with it. It's perfect! I had it wrapped in steel before it was built with stone. It looks great. Thank you!!! July 28, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by What a disappointment It's a great door, but the product does not match the description as the mail opening is only 6.5 inches, rather than the 8.5 advertised. That's only 0.5 inches larger than a standard mailbox. Further, the box itself seems to be polystyrene (the same stuff that is used for plastic model airplanes) or ABS, and thin. Not sure what the description of "masonry composite" is supposed to be, but this is just cheap plastic. Not at all worth the $250 price tag. April 16, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by The face is powder coated cast aluminum and looks good, but the box part is plastic. For $280 I would expect the entire box to be made of aluminum. The face is painted cast aluminum as advertised and looks good but the box part is plastic. For $280 I would expect the entire box to be made of aluminum. I also bought the news paper holder and that box appears to be painted steel, hopefully it is galvanized, time will tell. Again for what they charge the body shouldn't be plastic that will get brittle and crack over time or steel that will rust. May 24, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Pillar Mailbox After a car crashed into our brick and stone pillar mailbox, it had to be completely rebuilt. We upgraded our mail box and found this one on-line. Very high quality, perfect bronze color, very classy look. It was delivered within two days. Couldn't be more pleased. Also found it elsewhere for more money, so a great deal. May 17, 2010
