What kind of sand should i use for a chicken pen bottom?

Asked by: woody
A sand that does not contain silica. this sand does not contain silica, that makes it safe for the chickens. However, I don't know how you feel about having little dust clouds arise when it's time to clean it out, because this does get dusty and it does annoy me.

OK with vegetables?

Can I use this sand in an area with a vegetable garden? I want to use it to level an area for a raised vegetable garden. Are there any contaminants that might be a problem with growing food?
Asked by: dtmd
From my research it seems the hazard of crystalline silica is breathing it in via dust. Some statements from this OSHA article - http://www.cbs.state.or.us/osha/pdf/pubs/3301.pdf "Crystalline silica exists almost everywhere in our natural environment. It’s abundant in soil, sand, dust, quartz, and granite rock." "Silicosis is a lung disease caused by breathing dust containing particles of crystalline silica." "And unwashed root vegetables like potatoes are coated with soil containing crystalline silica — a possible health hazard **for those who harvest, sort, and bag them without appropriate exposure controls.** Keep in mind that crystalline silica can cause silicosis only when we breathe it into our lungs as dust or a fine powder." I am under the impression that it should be safe as a soil amendment to grow my aloe vera succulents organically.

Can it be used for a fire pit ?

Asked by: sergio
QUIKRETE® All Purpose Sand may be suitable for use in a firepit. If your firepit is fabricated, or built from a kit, please reference the manufacturer’s instructions. Some specify using sand, while others call for lava rocks, or other materials. Generally, sand, rock, or lava rock are acceptable. Particularly if using any type of rock or stone, it is important to ensure that the material is dry - Any rocks or stones which are not dry can shatter when heated.

Only reason I though this would be a good sand for the chicken coup run is because it does not contain any silica, it's cheap, and the description stated the sand was course and also another review did recommend this product to use inside the chicken coup run as it would make chicken droppings easier to clean up than to spray down with a hose. With that being said, I bought 3 bags. I only opened two, because I really needed something down on the run. I like that it's soft in texture. that's it. I gave it two stars because it is not course as the description read and it makes dust clouds when I poured the sand out. so I know there will be more dust clouds as I clean/remove the chicken droppings. I am reviewing based upon how good this product would be if ever used for chicken coup run. Not because of other purpose, but for only this stated purpose. Oh and it also doing a good job absorbing water droppings from the chicken water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value I used this sand to provide a level base for a walkway. It worked perfectly and wasn't so fine that I had issues with it blowing away, even though I was working on a windy day.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works to start my Mittleider garden I picked the best ten bage off of the skid that was at sholder height. no one around for help at the matteson store at 0900. I hand loaded them one at a time onto a tarp inside my car. when I drove the 4 miles and unloaded them 4 had leaked out of the ends all over my tarp. I never handled the ends that leaked. I handled a lot of heavy machines and daily lifted 100 pound plus items during my last job for 24 years the bags are only paper. as I will need to buy at least 20 more bags, I will need to buy a roll of duct tape to secure the bag seams.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great as an underlayer for paving stones I used this sand along with Home Depot paving stones to build a walkway. Putting sand down first is important to keep the paving stones level and in place.
