Customer Questions & Answers

How long do I need to wait to apply stain after pressure washing my deck? Hours? Days? Weeks?

Asked by: Palmyrita
Generally, two to three days. If it's hot and the deck is in direct sun, I'm sure you could get away with 24 hrs.

Interior?

I know it says exterior, but can it be used in interior settings? If so, does the floor need to be sanded first? Thanks!
Asked by: EllieFW
HomeDepot.com sells this product in the interior. Just look online for the blue Ready Seal label. It's the same quality as the exterior. I would recommend that after you stain your item to put a coat of varnish, poly or whatever else you may want to seal it.

I waited six weeks and was very pleased with the results. I think the minimum recommendation is one month.

Is it necessary to re-coat or will one coat be sufficient?
Asked by: tk
I will only need to re-coat a small area where the fence showed some hail damage and the sun is on that part of the fence most of the afternoon.

I've used Woodrich Timber Oil on a pressure-treated deck that I've been rehabbing. Both the Woodrich and Ready Seal are paraffinic oil based, as I understand it, and seem fully compatible. When this went on sale, I decided to give it a try based on the reviews. I am impressed and fully satisfied with the results. To my knowledge, paraffinic oils never truly dry, so if you're patient, any mistakes you might make in application will shortly disappear -- drips, lap marks, over application, it doesn't matter. Given a few hours or a few days, the oil will slowly spread out and soak in, with beautiful results. Best of all, when it is time for a maintenance coat, you won't have to strip or sand anything. Just scrub it down or pressure wash it (gently) and, if you want to be really thorough, use a brightener, and you can then put another coat right over the old finish. It will soak in and look great. I used a simple pump-up garden sprayer to apply it, and back brushed any areas where the stain hadn't soaked in within an hour (there were only a couple of puddles on a 600 sq. ft. deck). Over the next couple of days, the color and penetration continued to even out, and it just looked better and better. One thing to be aware of -- if you've got the remains of acrylic stain or something like that on your deck, you're going to have to bite the bullet and strip/sand/grind it off. This isn't going to soak through stuff like that. And once you get down to bare wood, be ready to use quite a bit of anything oil-based. When I finally got my deck stripped and sanded, it drank up the oil like a dry sponge. On subsequent applications, I haven't needed anywhere near as much product.

I used a roller to apply the stain and was happy to find no streaks whatsoever. The pigments in the stain are amazingly strong, thus it went on smoothly and gave me perfect results with 1 coat. The dark walnut is a very rich color and made my cedar deck look beautiful and expensive. I need however to comment on the idiotic white seal that comes on top of the can. It is probably great at keeping the lid on, but it is an absolute nightmare to take off if you do not have adequate snippers. It took me a good 10 mins trying to get it off and I ended up piercing the lid by mistake...

I bought 10 one gallon cans of Ready Seal because the smaller cans were easier to handle and open. They were delivered by UPS free of charge to my home. The cans had a white plastic rim around the top of the each can that required a pliers to remove it. Ready Seal is easy to use. My neighbors told me the fence looks like a professional did the work. I highly recommend using Ready Seal for renewing or re-staining a fence. It requires only one coat unless the fence has hail damage and then that area might need a second coat of stain. Ready Seal will make your fence looks beautiful again.

It blends beautifully. no streak marks or having to re-brush areas. The color is true dark walnut. I stained my entire deck, privacy fence, gates and porches. Water no longer penetrates the wood. Only thing is one has to apply at least 2 coats because the sun will lighten the stain. 5-star product!

Color looks great though it did lighten up significantly after a couple of weeks of curing. Only criticism is that I wish it had a bit more water repellency, but it's not bad. Overall, very happy and I would use it again.

I applied with a cheap dollar store sponge roller, and all bubbles disappeared. No cleanup required for me. I will definitely eschew Minwax and continue to purchase this product.
