Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be applied with a pump sprayer?

Asked by: AngieR
The best sprayer is going to be a professional type such as a Solo 456. It has a brass tip, and it can be pressurized much higher than the lower cost sprayers. I shot 16 gallons over 2 days of the pecan stain, and the sprayer performed very well without having to thin the product. Clean up was easy using paint thinner.

How would this product be on a deck that has been coated with Flood CWF over 20 years of coatings approximately every 3 years? Is it a semi clear transparent or solid stain. Will the grain of the wood show through?
Asked by: Ron
Ron.. you may want to contact Ready Seal directly to get an answer. You can get the number from their website. They actually answer the phone and are very good.

Can this stain be used on pressure treated wood?

Asked by: JP
Yes - however, it has poor coverage and consistency - even with 2 coats. I suggest the Home Depot brand, Baer.

How long does it have to dry before rain comes?

We are expecting rain but would like to get the deck stained first. How long should we allow for drying time before newly stained deck is rained on?
Asked by: NorthwoodsGal
That depends on the age of the wood and outside temperature. Normally it takes 12-24hrs before you can apply a second coat (if needed). With temps above 70 degrees, the wood will be dry in 4-8hrs.

Fence looks great with the Pecan stain, fresh "yellow" wood slat-on-slat panels; wood soaked up the stain and required more than 3x the amount I estimated from the Ready Seal charts. We used a combination of pump sprayer and roll/brush-on for the application. Pump sprayer for large-scale areas and brush/roller for detail and when spray over the top of the fence was not desirable. We also found that a light first layer will soak into the wood (ours is new) over a period of several days and the color lightens. Eventually we applied a thicker initial layer and the color remained steady after application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product - Easy to apply and stain. Purchased 20 gal. Stained my fence and patio. It was 4yrs old.. Cedar 6"BOB - roughly 2050sqft. Used my 2 gallon pump-up sprayer to apply the stain to the wood, then followed up with a paint brush to ensure evenness and cover overlap. It took me and another guy about 4hrs to complete the job. Very simple process and definitely a great product. Here are Before/After pics. it should lighten up with 10-14 days... depending upon the weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Stain Sealer Sprayed 5 Gallons on Boat House and Floater came out awesome and was easy to apply. Goof Proof it Is! Wipes off the galvanized brackets and gray PVC pipe with ease. I made a few runs and when I moved the sprayer I spilled some on the walkway sprayed my way down and the spot is gone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good stain for deck Stain was purchased after reading many customer reviews on Home Depot sight and several others. Appeared to be the best product out there and after using Ready Seal I agree. Stain was delivered directly to my house with free shipping in about a week. Used on 10x40 deck and 5 gallons covered new treated pine decking but will need more for railings. I would estimate 425 sq ft coverage for 5 gallons. Used semi transparent pecan color and it looked great and showed grain of wood nicely. Applied with roller and brushed between boards and excess stain. Soaked in well and repelled water after rain. Will see how it lasts

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Used this stain on a treated deck after letting it dry out for approx. 3 months.Sprayed the handrail which made the job much easier (watch for overspray) covered the handrail evenly and the pecan color came out beautifully, sorta a warm medium brown. For the deck ( 5/4 stock) I used a car wash brush which made the job easy and quick. It covered evenly with no brush marks and the brush filled in any space between boards. Absorbed into the deck evenly also.Oil based product so clean up is more work ( I toss everything anyway) but well worth it. I have had problems with the new water based products, they can peel easily which is a nightmare. Best deck stain I have ever used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Over Previous Alkyd Oil-Based For years I have finished my deck with Marine Spar Varnish and was very concerned about whether this product would work over the old beat-up finish, even though I took the time to sand. The Ready Seal (Pecan) soaked right in and the second coat was put on an hour after the first. (I used a block brush.)Then, I let it dry for the full 72 hours and the 20 year old deck looks beautiful. The recent rains bead up nicely and the smell was nothing at all like the old varnish. I will use this again in a few years!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ready seal deck stain and sealant Ready seal was very easy to use I bought one 5 gal Pail and went back for one more to be able to put a second coat on in the spring! I am a 65 Yr old female and I put it all on by hand with a brush! This was a 3yr old pressure treated wood deck that had not been sealed yet so I wanted to insure I applied enough stain for a good first coating! It came out beautiful no brush marks. Water beads up on it, and I'm very happy with the color! It did lighten after drying!
